It is with great sadness in which we inform you that our dear mother Dr. Padma Mahajan, surrounded at home by her loving family, passed away in Connecticut on Friday, December the 28th, 2018 at 4 AM at the age of 89.
Mom came to the United States in 1965 on a Fulbright Scholarship in order to study at Columbia University in New York City. There, she completed her Masters and Doctoral degrees in Education and Psychology. During her time in the city, she attended and worked at the World’s Fair, held in New York, representing India.
Dr. Mahajan taught psychology as a professor at the College of Staten Island in NY. Later on in her career, she practiced as a clinical psychologist at Willowbrook Developmental Center and Creedmoor Psychiatric Center. Our mom was also a co-founder of the Asian American Community Center in Flushing, Queens, NY where she assisted many families who recently immigrated to the United States. Mom’s life mission and passion was always helping those in need.
Our mom enjoyed painting, poetry, gardening, and swimming. Throughout her life she traveled to countless countries across six continents. She participated in many organizations in both New York and West Virginia.
Mom was a very vibrant woman, full of life and with an unremarkable grit and determination. She was the pillar of strength to the entire family in the United States and in India. She will be dearly missed by us all.
Our mother leaves behind her two loving daughters and their husbands, seven grandchildren, two spouses of her married grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. To all of the aforementioned, she was known affectionately as UMMY. MOM will be missed by her two sisters and many extended family members and friends in the US and India.
