She was Pura’s role model, teaching her always to find time to help others. Pura was a middle child; her older sister Carmen Delgado passed away in 2014, her youngest brother Frank Agustin passed away at 6 years old, her son Frank Caraballo in 1981, and her grandson Justin Davis in 2008.
Pura graduated from high school with dreams of college and becoming a lawyer, crushed when it was thought she had tuberculosis. She was hospitalized, released with no illness, and instead migrated to New York City, where she met and married Jose Caraballo, the father of her two beloved children, Alicia and Frankie.
Pura left bustling New York City and moved to New Haven, Ct, in 1966. She became a community organizer in the civil rights movement. Pura’s hard work and dedication to her neighborhood and city resulted in the development and creation of the following community agencies: Junta for Progressive Action, Fair Haven Community Health Clinic, Crossroads, and Latino Youth Development, organizations that continue to provide important services to the New Haven community.
In addition to her community work, she never forgot her educational goals; she attended South Central Community College and Albertus Magnus College. Her restless energy led her to become a business owner, where she opened the Silver Chalice Bridal Shop in downtown New Haven, which later expanded into a grocery store and real estate business.
In 1991, Pura retired to Orlando, Florida, where she remained active in politics and was so proud of her work in Bill Clinton’s reelection campaign in 1996. She continued her community work and is in the Florida Congressional Record - House of Representatives, where she was recognized by Hon. Alan Grayson on Wednesday, January 23, 2013.
Pura was diagnosed with Dementia in 2016 and lost that battle on December 19th, 2025, where she peacefully passed away at Civita Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Milford. She leaves a loving daughter, Alicia, cousins, and many friends in Connecticut and Florida.
A memorial and celebration of life will be held in the spring of 2026.
