  Joan called me out of the blue one day in 1990, when I was serving as dean of the then-School of Education (now, Attalah College of Educational Studies). She wanted to support our programs, and from then on she became one of our most enthusiastic benefactors and a personal friend to Ken and me. In recent years I visited her as often as was comfortable for her, and we always had a lot to talk about! I will miss her feisty approach to the problems of education today and her willingness to speak out candidly. A rare quality these days when we all seem to be so hesitant to speak bluntly. Joan was a very dear and special friend of mine.  She was a loyal supporter of Town & Gown and I had kept in touch with her via Christmas cards all these years.  Thanks for a friendship of more than 30 years.  I shall miss her.  Eric Scandrett
