Barbara Jean Jones Waldrop, age 87, of Alabaster, Alabama passed away peacefully on Friday, July 14, 2023. She was born in Birmingham, Alabama to Clarence and Myrtle Jones. She was married to the love of her life, Emmett, for 68 years, after only a three-month courtship.
Barbara was a devout Christian, who served the Lord faithfully. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Alabaster for 60 years where she served as a Sunday School teacher for young people and worked in the children's department. She loved working on the kitchen committee because she loved serving others and greeting them with a smile at Wednesday night suppers and other special occasions.
Although she was an only child, she was blessed with cousins that were like brothers and sisters to her, and she loved them all so much. Her life was also filled with many friends that she loved spending time with.
She was overjoyed when her grandchildren were born, and she spent as much time with them as she could. She taught them how to love Jesus and prayed for them continually.
Barbara loved to read and write poetry and she invested much time in working on her family tree and creating scrapbooks for her grandchildren. She enjoyed going on day trips with Emmett but would never miss a Sunday or Wednesday at church.
She was a substitute teacher at Thompson High School until her daughters graduated. Following that, she worked as a merchandiser for many years.
Barbara is preceded in death by her husband, Emmett Waldrop, Jr.; and her mother and father, Myrtle Thompson Jones and Clarence Jones.
She is survived by her daughters, Vicki Sims (Dennis) and Susan Maddox (Jimmy); her grandchildren, Jared Sims, Jeremy Sims (Danielle), Jennifer Gallops (Michael), Abbi Rachels (Jonathan), and Abe Maddox (Thuvan); her great-grandchildren, Whit Rachels, Baylor Gallops, Lanier Gallops, Lena Beth Sims, Tucker Gallops, West Rachels, Jack Sims, and Emmett Maddox, whom she loved dearly.
She was a loving Mother and Mother-in-law. She loved her Sons-in-law as if they were her own and she loved being a Granbaba. Her legacy will be cherished.
The family would like to give a special thanks to the medical staff from SouthernCare Hospice (Michelle, Marcia, Sarah, Anita, Andrea and Latisha) for their wonderful and devoted care.
