On Saturday, December 22, 2018, Bruce Edward Johnston, age 80, passed away in Birmingham, Alabama. He put up a good fight and finally won! After a long struggle with vascular dementia, Bruce is finally resting.
Bruce was born in St. Catherines, Canada on December 15, 1938, to his English mother Lillian Newlove Johnston and his Florida cracker father Paul Johnston. By age seven his father Paul was tired of the bitter cold and blizzards and moved his family back to Tampa, Florida.
Bruce spent many years in the painting and construction field with his father, a master painter by trade. After many years of back breaking manual labor Bruce decided to go back to school. The University of Florida helped Bruce become a technical writer. From there he spent almost 30 years with the telephone company in Florida and Alabama. Finally retiring in Bushnell, Florida and back to his roots he spent his last good days with his cows, dogs, tractor, workshop and garden. He related to God best through all that He created.
Bruce was preceded in death by his father Paul, mother Lillian and son Michael. He is survived by his wife Collette Temple Johnston and children Celeste, Patrice, Stephanie and (son-in-law Mike); Grandchildren Courtney, Jason, Phillip, Joshua, Justin, Stetson, Samantha and great grandchild Breanna.
There will never be another Bruce Edward Johnston. God made him a one of a kind. This is a man that could make, fix or build anything, a man of integrity and hard work. He leaves us with a legacy that “there is no such word as can’t!”
Psalm 23:1-6
No services are scheduled at this time. Some of Bruce’s ashes will be scattered in a pretty wilderness area of Alabama, as were his wishes. Then, at a later date he will be reunited with his wife Collette at Myrtle hill in Tampa, Florida.
