Sara Margaret Pierson Kornegay was born on January 10, 1927 in Tuscaloosa and passed from this life on February 15, 2021 due to complications of Leukemia. She was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, James Luman Kornegay, Jr., parents, L. B. Pierson, Sr. and Virginia Hubbard Pierson Caffee, daughter-in-law, Barbara Kornegay, and her brother, L. B. Pierson, Jr. (Bill) . Survivors include her four children: Dr. J. Randall Kornegay of Montgomery, Virginia K. Dean (Mike) of Alpharetta, GA, Toni K. Vaughn (Roe) of Birmingham, and Dr. Kim P. Kornegay of Prattville, 10 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, sisters-in-law, Shirley Tucker of Jasper and Pat Boernge of Gulfport, and many beloved extended family members and friends.
She grew up in the Cedar Grove community of Bibb County attending the three room New Hope School through ninth grade and tenth grade at West Blocton. She graduated from Central Wesleyan Boarding School and attended Central Wesleyan College both in Central S.C. She owned and operated her own Beauty Shop while living in Coffeeville, AL and was Secretary and Bookkeeper at Bibb County High School and Bibb County Jr. High. She retired from Central Alabama Easter Seal Rehabilitation Center in Montgomery as bookkeeper.
A member of the Eastern Star, she served as Worthy Matron in Coffeeville, AL. She also served as President of the BPW and Pilot Clubs in Bibb County. She spent many years teaching Sunday School and Bible School at Coffeeville Baptist Church, Centreville Baptist Church and Coosada Baptist Church. She also served as Choir Director at Coffeeville Baptist Church. Everywhere she lived she was known as a “go to” person for helping others. Her philanthropic and volunteer efforts are too numerous to list.
Sara Margaret was a remarkable woman. During World War II she was an active participant in the war effort with the local Bibb County War Wives and as a 17 year old bride traveled alone, by train, across the country to be with her beloved sailor in San Fransisco before he shipped out to the South Pacific. She was the epitome of a true southern lady. An avid proponent of education, she saw all her children and grandchildren achieve degrees, some of them advanced. Her sharp memory and delightful storytelling enthralled many right up to the very end. Her children, she said, were her greatest accomplishment.
Graveside services and burial will be at the Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo on February 26, 2021. Due to Covid 19 restrictions masking and social distancing are required along with a limit, regrettably, of 25 persons strictly enforced. The family has notified those who will able to attend. Rev. Robin Blakemore will officiate.
At this time, no flowers are allowed. In lieu of any flowers Sara Margaret requested donations be made payable to Michael Lewis for the Cedar Grove Cemetery Care 575 Cedar Grove Rd. West Blocton, AL 35184 or First Christian Church https://onrealm.org/fccbhm/-/give/LGQZDMYIBT using the drop down for Memorial Fund and note in memory of Sara Kornegay. Funds will be used for Backpack Buddies, a food Outreach program for at risk children. Centreville Baptist Church donations in memory of Sara Kornegay will be sent to the Baptist Children’s Home.
The family would like to express our deepest appreciation to the staff and residents of Congregate Housing at Cahaba Trace in Centreville, Amedisys Home Health and Hospice, Bibb at Home, the Brookwood Baptist 7th floor staff, and her final caregivers, Lois Skaggs, and Mary Hobson.
