Vera June Blackerby, age 83, of Calera, left this world to be with the Lord on October 6, 2019 after a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease. She was the second of seven children born to Rev. Jimmy Joe Horton and Vera Mae Garrett Horton. She was a hard worker her whole life, whether taking care of her family or running multiple successful businesses. She was a member of Kingwood Assembly of God and remembered Bible verses even as Alzheimer's took so much of her memory. Her enjoyment in life came from gardening, quilting, sewing, cooking, canning, and especially spoiling her grandchildren. She was an extraordinary mother and grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Terrell Pickett; her daughter, Mary Burch; and brothers, Morris Horton, Wayne Horton, and Larry Horton. She is survived by her children, Perry Blackerby, Rhonda Pate (Wayne), Regina Bates (Raymond) and Mark Blackerby (Christie); adopted son, Steven Blackerby; daughter-in-law, Lalitha Blackerby; grandchildren, Rekha Blackerby, Braydon Bates, Priya Blackerby, Amber Blackerby, Garrett Bates and Katie Blackerby; sister, Jimmie Ruth Headley (Lamar); brothers, Elton Horton (Faye) and Harry Horton (Beth); and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank the staff at South Haven Health and Rehabilitation for their exceptional care of Vera over the last several years.
