Babette Levy Wampold died September 9th, 2023 at the age of 89. She was born May 19th,1934, the elder child of the late Jerome Milton Levy and Emma Marie Ullman Levy of Demopolis, Alabama. Babette had an idyllic childhood in Demopolis and graduated Demopolis High School in 1952. She attended Sophie Newcomb College of Tulane University from 1952 to 1954, when she married the love of her life Charles Henry Wampold, Jr. and moved with him to Montgomery, Alabama, where she resided until her death. Until Charles’ death in 2010, he and Babette were world travelers and avid collectors of antiques and of late 19th century/early 20th century American paintings. She loved playing bridge and mahjong with her friends at the Standard Club and Temple Beth Or. In the 1970s and 1980s, Babette worked tirelessly and effectively on behalf of refuseniks, persecuted Jews and Christian who had been denied exit visas from the Soviet Union.
Babette is survived by her only sibling, Jerre Levy, of Chicago, IL and by her three adoring children and their spouses: Jerre Lynn (Gary) Waters of Alpharetta, GA; Carolyn (Gary) Beller of Miami, FL, and Charles (Martha) Wampold of Princeton, NJ.
