

Dean Hutchison Kilgore Hawthorne, 82, a resident of Midlothian, VA, and former long-time resident of Montgomery, AL, died in Richmond, VA on May 24, 2012. Born on October 29, 1929 in Anniston, AL, she was married to Joe Kilgore from 1949-1979. They had two children. Dean taught at Whitfield United Methodist Kindergarten from the mid 1960s to mid 1970s. After earning a Master's degree in Special Education from Auburn University at Montgomery, she taught at Dozier Elementary.
In 1981 she married Jess Hawthorne and moved to Texas for 5 years, where she taught in the Conroe Independent School District in suburban Houston. Upon returning to Montgomery in 1987, Dean taught at Southlawn Elementary and at First United Methodist Church Preschool. Shortly after moving back to Alabama, Dean joined The Exchange Club of Montgomery, and remained an active member until she left Alabama in 2011. During that time, Dean served on the club's board, was a district director, and served as secretary for seven years. In 2006, Dean was named Exchangite of the Year. Dean was also a member of the Exchangettes, serving as various club officers. After retiring, Dean was a Meals on Wheels delivery volunteer for many years, and was a dedicated volunteer at Head Elementary. Preceded in death by her parents, Hoytt and Lottie Mae Owen Hutchison , granddaughter, Lindsay Neill, sisters Jane Wooten and Anne Ellis, Dean is survived by her husband, J. C. Hawthorne, Jr., of Midlothian, VA, daughter Terri Kilgore Neill, of Montgomery, AL, son and daughter-in-law Kevin Kilgore and Laura Anderer, of Houston, TX, grandchildren Ashley Neill Thomas, and husband Justin, Hunter Neill, Parker Neill, Austin Kilgore, and wife Haley, Gillian Kilgore, great-grandson Luke Thomas, and Jess’ children and their families, Irma Hill, and husband, Rico, and Jay Hawthorne, of Yoder, CO and James Hawthorne, Jerry Hawthorne and wife, Jill, of Colonial Heights, VA, and grandchildren Tishanna, Janet, Jacob, Katherine, Karoline, and great grandchildren Azalea, Gabriel and Aiden. Dean is also survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Susan and Neil Smith, of Beebe, AR, brother and sister-in-law Charlie and Carolyn Hutchison, of Eastaboga, AL, brother-in-law Myles Wooten and wife, Nita, of Mammoth Spring, AR, seven nieces and nephews and their families, and Jess' four children and their families. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at 11:00 A.M. at Greenwood Cemetery in Montgomery, AL, with a visitation starting at 10:00 A.M. at White Chapel Funeral Home.
