TAYLOR, ELAINE PITTMAN, age 93, died peacefully at Crowne Healthcare on November 9, 2015 after enduring extended health issues. She was possessed of a strong will and determination in all endeavors, yet was a compassionate and loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and aunt. She set an example of zest for life, hard work and determination for all of her loved ones and friends. Above all, her deep and abiding belief in Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit and love for her Lord will be her lasting legacy. She will truly be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Mrs. Taylor was born in Union Springs, Alabama on October 9, 1922, the youngest of six children born to Patty Bickerstaff Pittman and Norborne Powell Pittman, Sr. She attended high school in Auburn, graduating at the end of the 11th grade. After graduation, she followed several siblings to Washington, D.C., where she was accepted to attend Georgetown. The effects of the depression caused her to take a job instead and, when war was declared, she went to Baltimore where she served the war effort as a true “Rosie the Riveter.” After the war, she returned to the Montgomery area, eventually becoming a real estate agent and broker for many years. She became a very successful real estate agent in the Montgomery area, was an avid tennis player, loved the outdoors, enjoyed traveling and, indeed, generally enjoyed life. She touched many hearts and souls in her lifetime.
Mrs. Taylor is survived by her son, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren: Bert Taylor (Mary), Ty Taylor, Will Taylor, and Vira Knight (Jeremiah, Christopher and Lizzie).
Also surviving are many nieces and nephews on both the Taylor and Pittman sides of the family, all of whom truly loved her and drew strength and inspiration from her deep faith.
Along with her mother and father, Mrs. Taylor is preceded in death by four brothers and one sister: N.P. Pittman, Jr., Robert W. Pittman, Holoway B. Pittman, James M. Pittman and Lucy E. Pittman.
The funeral service will be on Friday, November 13, 2015 at 11:30 a.m. at Leak Memory Chapel in Montgomery, with burial following at Greenwood Cemetery. Prior to the service, the family will receive friends at the funeral home beginning at 10:30 a.m. Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Ty Taylor and Will Taylor, nephew, Butch Taylor, Tony Godwin, Joe Sexton, Chip Nix, Wight Waters and Steve Shockley.
Her son would like to give special thanks to Mary Dudley who helped take care of his mother with much love and patience the last few years of her life. She has been a family friend for many years and shared Mrs. Taylor’s deep and sincere love of Jesus Christ. Services are under the direction of Leak Memory Chapel (272-6501), 945 Lincoln Rd., Montgomery.
