Fred G. Johnson, age 77, died on Thursday, February 8, 2018 after a long and arduous battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) while in the loving, compassionate care of Baptist Hospice. He was born in Jones County, Georgia on December 27, 1940 and was the youngest of 9 siblings. He graduated from Jones County High School. Then he went on to join the Navy, in which he served as a personnelman for over 9 years, including being stationed in Cuba during the confrontational times in the early 60’s. During his Navy career, he met and married his wife of 56 years, Barbara Jones Johnson. Later, he moved to Montgomery, graduated from Huntington College, and went on to work for the Office of the Inspector General. After retirement, he took up a much beloved job sharing his love of history touring groups at Old Alabama Town. An avid Harley rider, he also served a term as President of the Birmingham Harley Owners Group. A great husband and loving father, he will be missed by his family. He leaves behind two children, Rev. Anthony Lamar Johnson of Athens, Alabama; Melissa Ann Bishop of Birmingham, Alabama; and five beloved grandchildren.
