John Malone Ashurst Jr

He was born October 28, 1932, to John M Ashurst Sr and Mildred Hancock Ashurst. He received his education at Stark University School and Sydney Lanier High school, class of 1949. He developed a strong work ethic by helping out at his father's drug store from the age of ten, He attended the US Naval Academy and graduated from the University of Alabama in 1954, then received his MD from the Medical College of Alabama in 1958. After internships, residency and a year of family practice in York Al, he served in the USAF at Shilling AFB in Salina, Kansas.

He returned to Montgomery in June 1965 and practiced medicine, specializing in Obstetrics and Gynecology until 2001. He followed retirement as a volunteer treating patients at Medical Outreach Ministries until 2013. For many years he served on the Board of directors of the U of A Alumni Association, its related organization Cadeucus Club, and was a longtime member of Frazer United Methodist Church.

he was married July 10, 1955, to Alice Eugenia Ambrose until her passing on July 20, 2023. He was

preceded in death by his parents and brother Thomas Earle Ashurst.

He is survived by his 3 sons, John M Ashurst III (Jay), Jeffrey N Ashurst (Jeff), Lawrence J Ashurst (Jerry) and his daughter in law Cheryl Norwood Ashurst (Jeffs wife) and their children Allie Ashurst Reich and Jeffrey Ashurst, along with Harrison Reich (Allies husband) and Rebecca Cofield Ashurst (Jeffreys wife)

along 3 great grandchildren. Pallbearers will be family.

Memorial donations can be made to the Humane Society Animal Shelter.

A visitation for John will be held Wednesday, May 28, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Leak Memory Chapel, 945 Lincoln Road, Montgomery, AL 36109. Following the visitation will be a graveside service at 2:00 PM at Greenwood Serenity Memorial Gardens, 909 Lincoln Rd, Montgomery, Alabama 36109.
