

Joseph Winter Thorington, Jr. died February 27, 2012. A native of Montgomery, he was born July 22, 1924. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eunice Semmes and Judge Joseph Winter Thorington. A graduate of the Barnes School and Phillips Exeter Academy, he enlisted in the United States Army after two years at Harvard College. He served as a truck driver at Fort Benning, GA and an intelligence analyst in Washington D.C. during World War II. At the end of the war, he returned to Harvard to earn his degree. Mr. Thorington was quite the character and after sojurns in San Francisco, New Orleans and North Carolina, he returned to Montgomery to live in his family home “Winter Place” until he became too ill to live alone. He leaves behind numerous cousins and friends. A graveside memorial service will be held at Greenwood Cemetery Sunday, March 4, 2012 at 1:00 PM with the Rev. Chip Broadfoot of the Episcopal Church of the Ascension officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Montgomery Historic Society, P.O. Box 1829, Montgomery, 36102 or to a charity of one’s choice. Arrangements under the direction of Leak Memory Chapel, Montgomery, AL.
