His funeral will be held at Grace Pointe Church of Christ on Tuesday, August 8 with visitation at 10 am and a service beginning at 11 am.
Born in Tulare, California, on June 16, 1954, to John Patrick and Beatrice May Bettencourt O’Connor, Mark was the fourth of six siblings: Linda Hood, Kathy Dean (Durden), John O’Connor Jr. (Trish), Ronnie O’Connor, and Michael O’Connor (Katie).
In 1963 the O’Connor family moved cross-country to Montgomery, Alabama. Mark graduated from Lee High School in 1972 and married his high school sweetheart, Susan Conner O’Connor, in 1978. Mark and Susan have two daughters, Jennifer O’Connor and Lindsey O’Connor. The family has been blessed with sons-in-law Michael Crumpton and Trace Welch.
The great loves of Mark’s life were his four grandchildren: Maddox Crumpton, Laura Hollis Crumpton, Anneliese Crumpton, and Edith Welch. Through the end, Mark, or as they called him, Vô, was the consummate playmate and supreme snuggler, dolling out hugs and pretzels in equal measure. He was their greatest protector and champion.
His family and friends will remember Mark for his remarkable breadth of knowledge and depth of character. He was a self-taught builder, mechanic, jeweler, and gardener with expertise in roses, Sago Palms, and weed-free lawns. He was an avid and adept poker player and golfer; he proudly hit a hole-in-one at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail in Opelika. He rarely lost a board game and could guess the end of any movie with astonishing and infuriating accuracy. Mark was hardworking, intensely loyal, and profoundly selfless, and his trickster humor and blind love will be sorely missed.
Memorial donations towards the construction of a prayer garden may be made to Grace Pointe Church of Christ, 1565 Ray Thorington Road, Montgomery, Alabama, 36117.
The family would like to thank Dr. Mohammad L. Ahmed from River Region Cardiology and Dr. Harry Barnes and Ashton Jerkins, CRNP from the Montgomery Cancer Center for their kindness and care.
