He was preceded in death by his parents Pete and Maria Stratas, immigrants from the Island of Patmos, Greece. He is survived by his loving wife, Maria Stratas, children: Peter “Telly” Stratas, James (Sharrie) Stratas, and Evangelia “Angela” (Sam) Sessions, 6 wonderful grandchildren: Alexa, Sophia, Lewis, Nicholas, Mary, and Eleanor. He also leaves behind his brother, Tasso Stratas and sister, Kakie Duren (Richard) and a host of nieces and nephews.
Nick was born in Montgomery, Alabama and raised in the Capital Heights neighborhood. He attended Stark Military school and Lanier High school. After graduating from Auburn University, he went into the Air National Guard for six years. After the guard, he worked in the banking industry until he met the love of his life, Maria Vergos from Mobile, AL. They were married for 52 years where he was the devoted, kind-hearted, selfless “rock” of the family.
Nick opened Skatehaven in 1973 where he served his community for over 23 years. It was a second home for many children. He was a fill-in father that genuinely loved those children like his own. Years after the rink closed, he would light up when people would stop him and talk about Skatehaven days. He worked so hard for his family and loved what he did.
Nick was a devoted Orthodox Christian and was a dedicated member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church. He had a genuine love for his family, friends and Greek heritage. He was young at heart, had an infectious laugh, and never grew old. Nick was a true gentleman, the ultimate family man and cared and worried about his family until the end.
A visitation will be held at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church on Thursday, June 24, 2021 at 12:00pm and the funeral will begin at 1:00pm.
In lieu of flowers please send donations to: Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church 1721 Mount Meigs Rd Montgomery, AL 36107 in Nick Stratas’ honor.
