Bob entered the Air Force after graduating from Auburn University. He became a pilot qualified in the B-25 in 1958 and was assigned to Strategic Air Command (SAC) where he upgraded to what would become his favorite airplane, the state-of-the-art B-47 Stratojet long range bomber. In the B-47, he became triple qualified as a pilot, navigator, and bombardier and flew thousands of hours on airborne alert missions around the world. Later, he moved to Tactical Air Command flying the C-130, again flying missions around the world where he was often one of the first planes into hurricane and earthquake disaster sites bringing much needed relief supplies. In 1966, he went to Vietnam as a Command Post Officer and Pilot flying C-130 missions throughout the theater. After Vietnam, he was assigned to the Alternate Emergency Command Center at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery Alabama and flew T-29 aircraft until leaving the service in 1971. First and foremost a Pilot, Bob enjoyed flying in numerous aircraft types and enjoyed each assignment for the flying challenges they brought. He developed lifelong friendships with the crewmembers he flew with and enjoyed the opportunity to sit and talk about their flying adventures. Bob was also an Elder and a Deacon at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Montgomery.
A graveside service for Bob will be Monday, December 30, 2019 at Live Oak Cemetery in Selma, Al at 12:30 PM with a visitation at Leak Memory Chapel Monday, December 30, 2019 from 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM.
