Our dear Daddy, Robert Hamilton Strickland went home to his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Wednesday March 17, 2021 at the age of 92, while in the care of his family, following a brief illness. He was born on March 10, 1929 to William Napoleon and Edna Glenn (Stabler) Strickland of Braggs, Alabama; the fifth of eleven sisters and brothers. He is survived by his wife of 66 years Garnieta Nelson Strickland; daughter, Patricia Strickland; son, Robert Stephen Strickland; brother, Roy Carson Strickland (Ernestine); numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; his brothers in Christ, Jim Sutherland and Richard Alexander; and his brothers and sisters in Christ at Eastmont Baptist Church.
He will be remembered for his friendship and kindness. And, for his ability to make others feel as special as he felt about them. His joy was serving God, and helping his family and friends.
Baptized in the Christian Church, he joined Second Baptist Church (renamed Eastmont) following his marriage there to Garnieta in 1954. Daddy was a true and faithful servant of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He served his Savior as a Sunday School Teacher for the same class for nearly 60 years, as a Deacon for over 50 years, and as a Carpenter for Christ for more than 10 years.
Daddy started life on the family farm and began work at age 14, farming, cutting pulp wood, and later as a day laborer and heavy equipment operator for Lowndes County helping to support his family. Following his military service in the Korean War, he began working for Montgomery County Engineering Department, first as a diesel shovel operator and later as a District Foreman, retiring as a District Supervisor after 39 years.
He was a tireless vegetable gardner. He enjoyed sports; playing baseball and fast-pitch softball, and coaching women’s slow-pitch softball. He was an ardent Alabama football, basketball, and softball fan.
