Susan Edna Jones Helms died on March 22, 2025 at Karesh Long Term Care in Camden, SC where she had resided since Fall of 2023. She was born on February 26, 1936 in Newberry, South Carolina to Edward Samuel Jones, Jr. and Lallage Blanton Jones.
She grew up in several South Carolina cities as her father moved every four years or so from church to church as a Methodist minister in South Carolina. She graduated from Orangeburg High School in Orangeburg, SC and from Columbia College in Columbia, SC. Most of her long career was as a librarian with the VA Medical Center in Montgomery, Alabama, where she lived with her husband, Joseph Edward Helms until he died in November, 2017. As they had no children she moved to South Carolina to be near her only sibling, Nancy Jones Bradley and her husband, Jim.
Surviving her are the many relatives of her husband Joe, particularly Reverend Bill McNeese of Montgomery and Lane Sievers of Mississippi. Also in Columbia SC are her sister’s children James Edward Bradley and Jason Marshall Bradley and other cousins living in SC, NC, Florida, Tennessee, Ohio, and various other locations.
Much love and care was given to Susan in her later years by staffers at Pinedale Assisted Living Center in Camden SC and most recently at Karesh Long Term Care also in Camden. They are all kind, caring and skilled individuals who were loved by Susan and her family in SC. We thank them with grateful hearts.
