
Thomas Martin Tyson, junior, was born September 26, 1952, to Thomas Martin Tyson and Alice Hollon Tyson and died March 18, 2023. Tommy graduated from Jefferson Davis High School in 1970 and attended the University of Alabama where he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. He married Martha Ann Jones on February 22, 1975. Tommy and Martha were blessed with three daughters, Mary Alice (Steve) Browning, Wesley (Robert) Westerkom, and Laura (William) Crum, and six grandchildren who affectionately called him Tom Tom.
Tommy began his professional career in real estate management at Smith and Tyson, working alongside his father. His varied career included work at Capitol Imports and Jack Ingram Mercedes Benz. He then worked for the City of Montgomery as the Land Use Administrator for 22 years before his retirement in December 2022. Tommy’s professional activities included serving as a board member of the Montgomery Realtors, 8 years on the Montgomery Board of Adjustment, and as chairman of the Montgomery Planning Commission for 15 years.
Tommy was a lifelong member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, where he served as both Junior and Senior Warden. He was a past board member of the Montgomery Country Club and a member of the Montgomery Historical Society. Tommy was a lifelong fan of the Crimson Tide, a hunter, deep sea fisherman, barbecue enthusiast, and loved spending time at Lake Martin with his family.
Tommy was preceded in death by his parents and brother Fred White Tyson. In addition to his wife and daughters, Tommy is survived by his brother John Walter Tyson and 6 grandchildren: Virginia Browning, Andrew Westerkom, Phillip Browning, Martha Westerkom, Will Crum, and Louise Crum. His brothersand sisters-in-law also survive him: Florence Tyson, John Allen (Fran) Jones III, Laura Susan (Tommy) Roberts, and Louise (Bill) Hill. Tommy’s extended family includes many beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Honorary pallbearers will be Bob Steiner, Ham Wilson, Ed Webb, Greg Pappas, Mitch Alton, and Bill Davis.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, March 23rd at 11 am at St. John’s Episcopal Church, with visitation one hour prior to the service. The family will also receive friends and family on Wednesday, March 22nd from 4 to 6 pm at the family home. Memorials may be made to St. John’s Episcopal Church, 113 Madison Avenue, Montgomery, Alabama, 36104, or to the charity of one’s choice.
