He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Virginia Gray Guthrie and his wife, Gloria Mathews Gray. Virgil is survived by his current wife, Shelia Gray; his children, Sharon Gray (Brent) Bass, Clodine Michelle (Bailey) Jackson, and Christopher Allen Graves; his grandchildren, Taylor Bass (Evan) Barraza, Derrick W. Bass and Lillian Gober as well as 3 great grandchildren. He also leaves behind a nephew, Benjamin Guthrie and a niece, Virginia Walker.
Retiring as a highly decorated Colonel, he was active in leadership during the Gulf War.
A friends and family visitation for Col. Gray will be held Thursday, July 6, 2023 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at White Chapel-Greenwood Funeral Home, 909 Lincoln Road, Montgomery, Alabama 36109, followed by a celebration of life chapel service at 11:00 AM.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Virgil's memory may be made to Montgomery Humane Society.
