He was born on a farm in 1928 to Carl and Cora Smith in Slocomb, Alabama. Upon graduation from high school, he enlisted in the Army. He returned to Slocomb after leaving the Army and worked for his uncle at the Singer Sewing Machine Store in Dothan, Alabama beginning a career in sales and repairs that would last 32 years. He was long known in Montgomery and surrounding counties as the sewing machine repairman for personal and commercial machines and school home economics departments. He retired from Singer Sewing Machine Company in 1983 and then started his own business repairing sewing machines until he was 92 years old.
He loved having a garden and grew vegetables nearly year-round. He always preferred being outdoors rather than indoors and mowed his own grass until he was in his early 90s.
He attended the Citizens Police Academy after the death of his wife, Sue, in 2007 and then volunteered at the Montgomery Police Department until 2020.
A faithful servant of the Lord, he was a member and deacon at Highland Avenue Baptist Church and loved his HABC family.
