With Big Al from the LaSalle Junior Cardinals days circa 1989/90

To the Reid family,

Our deepest condolences on the passing of Alan. He will be greatly missed.

Over the past few years, Alan showed incredible kindness to my parents as they faced their own health struggles. He walked to visit them in hospitals and recovery centres, called to check in on them, and popped over whenever they were back at their home on Coronation. Whenever I was out front cutting the grass, he would come over to ask how they were doing. He also spent hours sitting with my dad, reminiscing about old times and sharing memories.

As a kid, I remember the early morning trips to hockey practices with Allan Jr., and even a couple of stops at Picasso’s on the way home. But it’s the past few years that I’ll remember most. It was the little acts of kindness, like bringing the recycling bins up and down the driveway for my parents or unplugging the Christmas lights when our timer wasn’t working properly.

It’s these little things that stand out the most. They may seem small, but they say so much about a person. They are what make someone a great man, father, and neighbour.

Alan will be remembered fondly, and we feel fortunate to have known him.

Our thoughts are with you all during this difficult time.

Dear Reid Family,
 
 I am so sad to hear this news. I met Al when he joined our baseball coaching staff in Cote St Luc. We always had great times coaching those kids and Al was a huge part of the team’s successes. Al had a great way about him in dealing with the kids and had a positive attitude, be it in his own way, which we very much appreciated. 
 My condolences go out to you all. May he rest easy. Love you Big Al ❤️😢⚾️

The few memories I have of him are the couple of times I talked with him.  His kindness and gentleness shone through.
We will never forget the times he helped out despite his own frailty.

Dear Rita and family,
It is with a heavy heart that we learned of Alan’s passing. Our sincerest condolences to you and the whole family during this very difficult time.
I’ve been thinking back to those days, many years ago, when Alan would pile a bunch of us into his big, brand‑new car and drive us out to the stock car races near the U.S. border. Those outings were always full of laughter and excitement, and Alan was at the centre of it all. He was such a gentle, kind soul — someone who made everyone around him feel at ease. He will be missed by all of us who were lucky enough to know him.
We wish you a lot of courage and strength in these trying times. Our thoughts are with you.

Dear Rita, Diana, Al Jr., Peter, Michelle and your extended families,
I was so sorry to hear of Al's passing. To this day, I remember all the good times I spent coaching with Al, and the times we would spend at your home with your family, when his kids really were kids. When he would ask, then yell at someone to close the door to the garage, and finally exasperated, just get up and close the door himself.  I recall Al's own language for many things, which I would have to decipher on the spot. We eventually just called them Al-isms. All the times we spent driving to games in his old clunker, the Al Mobile. Holy Christmas, man! He was a terrific coach and an all-round wonderful man. He was kind, very funny and a terrific family man. To this day, when I speak to those who knew him, they would ask 'How's Big Al doing?" I will miss running into him on Somerled and catching up with him. And like all of you, I will be comforted by the many happy and funny memories I have of him. I just wanted to extend my most heartfelt condolences on your loss.

To the Reid family, 

I believe that when we lose someone close, they continue living on through us. They'll be there to guide us in everything we do, lending us their eternal light and strength. They become part of us, and we're never alone.
