Born in Boston, Massachusetts, on September 4, 1941, Liz grew up in West Roxbury, Massachusetts, and attended Fontbonne Academy in Milton, MA, where she formed many lifelong friendships. Liz graduated from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, before moving to Atlanta, GA, to begin her teaching career. A lifelong learner, she later earned a graduate degree in English from Emory University.
In the late 1960s, Liz moved to Toulouse, France, where she spent four years immersing herself in the culture and cuisine. She eventually settled in Canada, first in Hamilton, then in Montreal in the mid-1970s. Liz loved teaching and worked at several schools in Montreal, with her final assignment at the Learning Center. In 1983, she graduated from McGill University with a second Master’s degree in Education.
A lifelong passion for reading sparked Liz’s desire to travel the world. Always planning her next adventure, she traveled extensively throughout Europe, living in France and Italy, and even teaching English in the Czech Republic for extended periods. Many of these journeys were shared with her close friend, Andree.
In addition to her travels, Liz had a deep appreciation for the arts. She was often eager to tell stories of her latest trips, dance performances, or art exhibits. However, her greatest personal passion was photography. She enjoyed capturing the world and its people through her lens. Her dear friend Josie played a pivotal role in her photographic growth, which brought Liz immense joy throughout her life. Her portraits of everyday life in Cuba, Italy, and Vietnam made viewers feel as though they had experienced these places with her.
Liz was a quiet, thoughtful soul, passionate about all forms of art—whether expressed through a photograph, a dance performance, graffiti, or a delicious meal. In recent years, she found joy and companionship while living at Manoir Westmount.
She led a full and meaningful life.
Liz is preceded in death by her parents, Francis J. Mitchell and Eleanor (Donohue) Mitchell, and by her beloved aunts, Helen and Mary Mitchell.
