Giuseppe was born in Collegrato, Italy on February 3, 1928, to his parents Pio Ottoni and Pasqualina Gasperi, in the Province of Teramo, in the region of Abruzzi. In 1951 he married a local villager, Maria Bachetti and shortly afterwards, in 1952, they emigrated to Canada in the hopes of making a better life for themselves and their future family, similar to many other Italian families in the post World War II years. They arrived at Pier 21 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and then continued on to Montreal where they settled, worked and raised their six children.
Over the years Giuseppe earned his livelihood and supported his family in many different ways. Undeniably, he was a man who demonstrated extraordinary energy, bountiful enthusiasm and a strong entrepreneurial spirit. He loved nature and was extremely passionate about life in general. He was a very hard worker who always had his family’s best interest at heart and he never made his lack of a formal education get in the way of his ability to make a better life for himself and his family.
Giuseppe was a risk taker and never shied away when confronted with new challenges and opportunities. Over his life-time, he ventured into various types of business activities and when he encountered any stumbling blocks and hurdles along the way, his ambition, persistence, resilience and resolve would guide him to quickly rise and take on a new endeavour.
As hard-working and zealous that Giuseppe was about the various business ventures that he undertook, his true joy and passion in life was spending quality time with his friends and family. He was a leader within his family and in the NDG Italian community who enjoyed celebrating the fruits of his labour, initiating and organizing various social events and occasions.
Giuseppe, who people often referred to as “Joe”, lived his life to the fullest. One can truly say that he enjoyed the finer things that life had to offer.
Giuseppe loved nature and the outdoors and spent many years relaxing on weekends and holidays at the Ste-Adèle country house that was built by him and Alta Abramowitz, with whom he shared the last 38 years of his life. There, he devoted countless hours creating his mini paradise and sanctuary from the hectic city life and where he loved to bike and ski the beautiful scenic trails in the area. It was the haven where he enjoyed many good times with family and friends who often visited.
Giuseppe was a very fit man who exercised regularly and who was always very health conscious. In fact, right up to a very ripe age, none of his much younger family members and friends could keep up with him on the bike and cross country ski trails!
Along with being an avid outdoorsman, Giuseppe and Alta enjoyed traveling the world and was fortunate to have had the opportunity to visit many wonderful and exciting places with family and friends.
There is no doubt that Giuseppe was passionate about life and lived it to the fullest. He set the bar high and was an inspiration and a role model for many to follow. His life was an inspiration to family, friends and acquaintances and he left a mark on many lives.
This exceptional man will be sorely missed by his loved ones who will undoubtedly find comfort in the many fond memories that he has left for us to cherish and treasure for years to come.
His legacy and spirit lives strong and will serve to guide and inspire many lives.
