Obituary James Shih Fong Feng, 1932-2021

James “Jimmy” S. Feng, 89, of Montreal, QC passed away Friday, June 4, 2021. Visitation -including online hours- scheduled Saturday, June 12, is detailed below.

Born in Shanghai, 1932, James was the second son of six for parents Henry & Ruby Feng. The family’s migration to Hong Kong saw completion of his first BA plus a relentless pursuit for Graduate studies and opportunities abroad. By 1958, armed with a Bachelor of Laws from Taiwan University Law School, he arrived in Canada. By 1960, Montreal’s McGill University would confer his Masters in Law. He would also successfully pass the Quebec Bar exam on the first try. Decades of statistics confirm even today, 1 in 5 law graduates fails to earn entry into the Bar, even upon re-taking the exam.

In January 1968, James’ acceptance into the Bar of Montreal prompted local recognition as the “first non-Canadian-born Chinese admitted to the practice of law here.” [The Montreal Star, by W. Wardwell titled, “Chinese here excel in careers and Lawyer Feng is example” -22 Jan. 1968-]

Community accolades would follow over the decades, most notably for the dedication, fundraising and professional expertise throughout the construction and re-establishment of the Montreal Chinese Hospital, 1986-1999.

James was predeceased by his parents (in Vancouver, BC) and three siblings: Charles of Hong Kong, William in Montreal and the family’s youngest who perished in Shanghai at age-10.

Married in 1961, James is survived by beloved spouse Lorenza, affectionately nicknamed “Tina;” daughter Lila with son-in-law Tom Greulich in Fort Worth, TX; son David with daughter-in-law Jenn Santamaria, grandsons Gianni and Nico in Manasquan, NJ. Surviving siblings include Johnny -Toronto- and George -Vancouver- with extended family throughout Canada and overseas.

His final care is provided by Centre Funeraire Cote-des-Neiges, 4525 Ch. de la Cote-des-Neiges, Montreal, QC H3V 1E7.

Visitation is scheduled Saturday, June 12, 1:30-8PM, EDT (underground parking available). Pandemic protocols may respectfully limit duration of attendees’ presence and prohibits any service at this time. We appreciate your understanding.

Dearest Aunt Lorenza, Lila, David, Tom, Jennifer, Gianna and Nico,
Please allow me to extend my condolences for your loss. My Mom also wanted to express her sorrow for Uncle Jimmy's passing and know that you are in her thoughts.
To my Aunt, I know that you have lost a life-long partner and friend but you should take solace in the fact that he is at peace. Also, the both of you raised two fine kids that you should be very proud of. If you need and shoulder to lean on, I am sure you can count on them.
To my cousins, I know what a big part of your lives your dad was. Believe me, he will continue to be so. As I have told you, you will think of him often in your day to day lives so he will remain a present and vivid part of both of you.
For my part, amusing moments involving Uncle Jimmy pop into my head from time to time so please know that he will always be in my memories.
take care of yourselves and each other.

I had the honor to meet this distinguished Montrealer when Jim and Lorenza showed up in Atlanta in the late 90's. Strange that I hadn't met Jim when I was a reporter in Montreal and it had to wait two decades. The Fengs had come south to visit their daughter, Lila, an on-air star at CNN International. Needless to say, they were very proud of her, and when Lila invited friends and colleagues to meet her parents, I thought that Jim seemed to maintain a watchful eye on the group, litigating to himself whether or not we were worthy of befriending his vivacious Lila. Never got the verdict on that. Jim Feng left too soon. My condolences to Lorenza, Lila, and the entire Feng family.

Dear Auntie Lorenza, Lila, David and Family

Linda, I and the girls were deeply sadden to learn about the passing of Uncle Jimmy. He was a great friend to my parents and our family. Uncle Jimmy brought us great memories and countless moments where we shared many laughs together. As a close friend, he presided and honored us at many important family events and milestones and for that we are deeply thankful. We are sorry we cannot be in Montreal to be with you, but our hearts and thoughts will be with you. God bless Uncle Jimmy and may he rest in peace.

Our deepest sympathy and condolences from our family to your family. Our family of three generations have known Mr. Feng for many years. He was Helen's parents' lawyer, a family friend and mentor to our son.
We hope the fond and loving memories of his engaging smiles bring some comfort and peace to Lorenza and your family during this difficult time.

Message from our son, Matthew " I will always remember my conversation with Mr. Feng that day when he took me to lunch during my visit to his office. I still think about it every now and then, it has stayed with me all this time.

He told me about hardships in China, about how there were signs in China saying "no Chinese allowed". And his struggles of getting to where he got.

Very inspiring, just showing me how to work hard and fight through obstacles, especially racial challenges that pull us down. "
