Jean-Pierre Charette

Nous avons le regret de vous annoncer le décès de Jean-Pierre Charette, à l’âge de 83 ans, le 16 juillet 2022, aux soins palliatifs de l’Hôpital de Lachine. Il était le fils de feu Albert Charette et feue Alice Bornais.

Jean-Pierre est né le 4 janvier 1939 et a vécu ses premières années à Gatineau (section Hull) où il affectionnait côtoyer ses oncles, ses tantes, ses cousins, cousines et amis d’enfance. Il s’exile à 18 ans à Del Rio, Texas pour s’enrôler au Laughlin Air Force Base comme apprenti medic. Il se hissa au poste de ‘’Airman in charge of Surgical services’’. Il assuma la direction de l’urgence pour soigner les soldats blessés sur une Île à proximité de Del Rio. Comme le disait si bien Jean-Pierre, il a passé 4 ans, 7 mois et 20 jours sur la base militaire. En 1962, il était prêt à de nouveaux défis.

Durant cette phase militaire, Jean-Pierre eut l’opportunité de jouer comme figurant cowboy dans le célèbre film The Alamo produit par John Wayne. Le film paru en 1960. Jean-Pierre a toujours été fier de nous montrer les photos de lui sur le plateau de tournage.

Sa nouvelle épouse Rollande Poirier originaire de Montréal, le rejoint au Texas en 1959 ou sont nées Christine et Anne. Son attrait pour le management et l’entrepreneurship l’oriente vers une formation en administration. Il assumera quelques postes de gérance aux alentours de Del Rio.

Par désir de retourner au Québec, la petite famille leva l’ancre pour Gatineau en 1963. Attiré par les affaires, Jean-Pierre et amis associés se lancèrent dans quelques projets d’affaires dont une ferronnerie et le démarrage d’une firme d’importation et de distribution locale de viande surgelée et poissons. Malheureusement un embargo international l’empêcha de poursuivre les affaires en importation. Sur cette période, la famille Charette voit naître Pierre et Michel.

Avec une formation médicale, mécanique et managériale, Jean-Pierre fut approché par la multinationale Ohio Médical, une firme spécialisée dans les systèmes médicaux anesthésiques On le nomma d’abord Directeur régional des ventes au Québec. Ce furent des années de grands voyagements à travers le Québec et les Maritimes s’impliquant à quelques occasions dans des projets de construction d’hôpitaux. Il manquait sa famille lorsqu’il partait tous les dimanches sur la route. En 1977, Ohio Médical le promu Directeur général pour l’Est du Canada. La famille Charette s’installa à Montréal.

À cette époque, il y avait une conscientisation sur les soins animaliers administrés par les cliniques vétérinaires. Pour toute intervention majeure, on devait maintenant anesthésier les animaux. Cette industrie était naissante. Jean-Pierre eut la brillante idée avec un compagnon technicien Serge Lachapelle à l’emploi d’Ohio Médical, de transformer les vieux appareils d’anesthésie que se débarrassaient les hôpitaux, en appareil animalier. D’abord entreposés dans le garage de Jean-Pierre ces vieux équipements prirent la route de Joliette pour être transformés et adaptés aux différents groupes animaliers. Ainsi fut née Dispomed inc en 1982, desservant d’abord les cliniques vétérinaires locales. Aujourd’hui 40 ans plus tard, la PME s’est transformée en un fabriquant important d’appareils et d’accessoires vétérinaires dont 90% est produit dans l’usine de Joliette, vendus au Canada, aux États-Unis et en Europe.

En 1988, les deux associés créèrent Anestec inc spécialisée dans la fourniture et l’entretien des systèmes d’anesthésie et de ventilation sur le côté humain. L’apparition de cliniques privées en chirurgie esthétique, de cabinets dentaires et de cliniques médicales privées, exigeaient davantage l’utilisation de produits anesthésiants plus sophistiqués. Aujourd’hui Anestec inc vend et entretien les systèmes anesthésiques au Québec et en Ontario.

Malheureusement Rollande Poirier Charette décéda en 1988. Quatre ans plus tard, les deux associés se dissocièrent, Jean-Pierre pris les rênes d’Anestec inc et Serge Lachapelle, celles de Dispomed inc. Jean-Pierre s’est dédié à sa firme jusqu’à son décès avec son associé et fidèle compagnon depuis plus de 40 ans, Claude Lajoie. Aujourd’hui sa conjointe et compagne de 32 ans a pris la relève avec Claude Lajoie.

Jean-Pierre sera manqué de tous, par sa conjointe Hélène avec qui elle a fait de merveilleux et nombreux voyages et excursions, de ses enfants qu’il adorait et qui les amenait pendant de nombreux mois de décembre, à Mazatlán Mexico, en compagnies de ses sœurs Suzanne et Micheline, de ses beaux- frères Pierre-Paul Carter et Harvey Charlebois, de leurs enfants et proches amis.

Il laisse ainsi dans le deuil sa conjointe, Hélène Woods, ses filles Christine Charette et Anne McGinn (Michael McGinn), ses fils Pierre Charette (Nathalie Deschênes…) et Michel Charette, ses petits-enfants Sean Langdon, Catherine Luxton (Jorge Andrade), Carl Langdon (Melissa Miller), Genevieve Séguin (Justin Lopez), Jordan Charette, de nombreux arrière-petits-enfants et de nombreux parents et amis.

Nous tenons à remercier la Docteure Genevieve Chaput et son équipe aux soins palliatifs et de l’Hôpital de Lachine pour l’attention apporté à Jean-Pierre et à sa famille durant les derniers moments de sa vie.

Les cendres seront exposées au Centre funéraire Côte-des-Neiges, 4525 Côte-Neiges, Montréal (stationnement intérieur disponible), le dimanche 31 juillet,au Salon des Saules (2e étages), entre 9 h et 13 h pour recevoir les condoléances d’amis et parents

Jean-Pierre Charette

We have the regret to announce the passing of Jean-Pierre Charette, at the age of 83, on July 16, 2022, in the palliative care at the Lachine Hospital. He was the son of the late Albert Charette and the late Alice Bornais.

Jean-Pierre was born on January 4, 1939 and lived his early years in Gatineau (Hull section) where he loved to interwind with his uncles, aunts, cousins and childhood friends. He left Hull, at the age of 18 for Del Rio, Texas to enlist at the Laughlin Air Force Base as an apprentice medic. He rose to the position of "Airman in charge of Surgical services". He took over the emergency ward to treat wounded soldiers on an island near Del Rio. As quoted by Jean-Pierre, he spent 4 years, 7 months, and 20 days on the military base. By 1962, he was ready for new challenges.

During this military phase, Jean-Pierre had the opportunity to play as a cowboy figure in the famous film The Alamo produced by John Wayne. The film was released in 1960. Jean-Pierre has always been proud to show us the photos of him on the set.

His new wife Rollande Poirier, originally from Montreal, joined him in Texas in 1959 where Christine and Anne were born. His attraction to management and entrepreneurship led him to a training in administration. He did assume some managerial positions around Del Rio.

Out of a desire to return to the province of Quebec, the small family returned to Gatineau in 1963. Attracted by business, Jean-Pierre and his friends-associated ventured into a few business projects including an ironwork shop and the start-up of a firm importing and distributing frozen meat and fish, locally. Unfortunately, an international embargo prevented him from pursuing this import business. During this period, the Charette family saw the birth of Pierre and Michel.

With a medical, mechanical, and managerial background, Jean-Pierre was approached by the multinational Ohio Medical, a firm specializing in anesthetic medical systems. These were years of a lot of traveling throughout Quebec and the Maritimes where on occasions, he was involved in hospital construction projects. He missed his family when he went on the road every Sunday. In 1977, Ohio Medical promoted him to General Manager for Eastern Canada. The Charette family settled in Montreal.

At that time, there was an awareness for animal care administered by veterinary clinics. As of then, any major procedure, the animals had to be anesthetized. This created a new market. Jean-Pierre had the brilliant idea with a fellow technician Serge Lachapelle employed by Ohio Medical, to transform the old anesthesia machines that hospitals were getting rid of, into animal equipment. First stored in Jean-Pierre's garage, this old equipment took the road to Joliette to be transformed and adapted to the various animal groups. Thus, was born Dispomed inc in 1982, serving first the local veterinary clinics. Today, 40 years later, the SME has transformed itself into a major manufacturer of veterinary devices and accessories, 90% of which is produced in the Joliette plant, sold in Canada, the United States and Europe.

In 1988, the two partners created Anestec inc specialized in the supply and maintenance of anesthesia and ventilation systems on the human side. The emergence of private cosmetic surgery clinics, dental practices and private medical clinics required the use of more sophisticated anesthetic products. Today Anestec inc. sells and provide a maintenance service on anesthetic systems in Quebec and Ontario.

Sadly, Rollande Poirier Charette died in 1988. Four years later, the two partners separated, Jean-Pierre took over Anestec inc and Serge Lachapelle, that of Dispomed inc. Jean-Pierre dedicated himself to his firm until his death with his partner and faithful companion for more than 40 years, Claude Lajoie. Today his spouse and companion of 32 years has taken over with Claude Lajoie.

Jean-Pierre will be missed by all, by his spouse Hélène with whom she made wonderful and many trips and excursions, his children whom he adored and who brought them for many months of December to Mazatlán Mexico, in the company of his sisters Suzanne and Micheline, his brothers-in-law Pierre-Paul Carter and Harvey Charlebois, of their children and close friends.

He is survived by his spouse, Hélène Woods, his daughters Christine Charette and Anne McGinn (Michael McGinn), his sons Pierre Charette (Nathalie Deschênes) and Michel Charette, his grandchildren Sean Langdon, Catherine Luxton (Jorge Andrade), Carl Langdon (Melissa Miller), Genevieve Séguin (Justin Lopez), Jordan Charette, many great-grandchildren and many relatives and friends.

We would like to thank Dr. Genièvre Chaput and her palliative care team at the Lachine Hospital for the attention given to Jean-Pierre and his family during the last moments of his life.

The ashes will be on display at the Côte-des-Neiges Funeral Centre, 4525 Côte-des-Neiges, Montreal (indoor parking available), on Sunday, July 31, at the Salon des Saules (2nd floor), between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. to receive condolences from friends and relatives.
