Karen cared deeply about children in thought and deed and dedicated her life to making a difference as a teacher at the Mackay Centre for 42 years. It was her absolute passion to make a difference in the lives of others, specifically those with disabilities. Karen was a maverick, innovator and leader in the field of special needs. Countless children benefited from her uniquely clever and unorthodox approaches. Karen was an ferocious advocate and did not stop until she found solutions to help make children with special needs welcome. She pushed boundaries to make this world a more inclusive place and developed one of the first successful integration and reverse integration programs.
Karen was a godmother, foster mother and mentor to many. Karen’s sanctuary was Hulmestead Farm. She generously welcomed droves through the years sharing this most favourite place with students, friends, relatives and colleagues – including any strangers she met on her path. Those whose lives were touched by Karen, always wondered what she’d do next because she never stopped. Karen was a personality and presence: Entertaining and Outrageous. Karen was larger than life: Now, perhaps figuratively and literally.
Daughter of Gordon Hulme and Ruth McLean. She is survived by her brother William Hulme (Sharon McKenna), her niece Rachel Lafayette (Christopher), their children Theo, Evelyn and Hudson, her nephew William Hulme, their mother Sheila Hulme, her cousin Evane Shanley and daughters Madeline and Katherine, Cousins Elizabeth Hulme (Barzell), Grant Hulme, and Brian Reid (Cindy).
