Mato Sonicki

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Mato Sonicki, beloved father, grandfather, and friend, who left us on 21st of April 2025 at the age of 91. Mato was a man of great strength, integrity, and kindness, whose presence touched the lives of everyone who knew him.

Born on 27th of May, 1933 in Hrvatsko Selo, Croatia, Mato was a dedicated husband to Jane (Lalic) Sonicki and loving father to his child, Maria. He was a proud grandfather to Petar and Kristina and cherished the time he spent with his family, always offering love, wisdom, and support. His devotion to his family was unmatched, and his legacy will live on through the values he instilled in all of us.

Mato was known for his warm heart and hardworking nature. He had a unique ability to make those around him feel special and valued, whether through a conversation or a shared laugh with a shot of Slivovica or Kruskovac (Croatian liquors). He was always willing to lend a hand, share a story, or offer guidance to anyone in need. His humility and kindness left an indelible mark on the hearts of all who were fortunate to know him.

In addition to his family, Mato had a deep connection to his Croatian community. He was respected and loved by many, and his contributions—both big and small—made the world a better place. Whether through his work, his friendships, or his quiet acts of service, Mato’s impact will be felt for generations to come.

Mato was predeceased by his father Marko Sonicki, his mother Eva (Medved) Sonicki, brother Viktor Sonicki, sister in law Ruza Sonicki and his niece Jasna Sonicki. He is survived by Maria (Lalic) and Alain Rinfret and his two brothers Ivica (Erna) Sonicki and Joza (Andela)Sonicki and many nieces, nephews and cousins, family, friends who will continue to honor his memory with love and gratitude.

The family will receive the condolences at the funeral home on Thursday May, 8, 2025 from 2pm to 5pm and from 7pm to 9pm follow by a service on Friday May 9, 2025 at St-Nicholas Tavelic’s church at 10am follow by a burial at Notre-Dame-des-Neiges cemetery at 11:15am.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St Nikola Tavelic Montreal Parish in Mato’s honor.

Mato will be deeply missed, but his spirit, love, and wisdom will remain with us always. Rest in peace, dear tata. Your journey may have ended, but the love you gave continues to shine brightly in the hearts of all who knew you.

C’est avec une profonde tristesse que nous annonçons le décès de Mato Sonicki, père, grand-père et ami bien-aimé, qui nous a quittés le 21 avril 2025 à l’âge de 91 ans. Mato était un homme d’une grande force, intégrité et bonté, dont la présence a marqué la vie de tous ceux qui l’ont connu.

Né le 27 mai 1933 à Hrvatsko Selo, en Croatie, Mato était un époux dévoué envers Jane (Lalić) Sonicki et un père aimant pour sa fille Maria. Il était un grand-père fier de Petar et Kristina, et chérissait chaque moment passé avec sa famille, offrant toujours amour, sagesse et soutien. Sa dévotion envers les siens était sans égale, et son héritage vivra à travers les valeurs qu’il nous a transmises.

Mato était reconnu pour son grand cœur et son ardeur au travail. Il avait ce don unique de faire sentir à chacun son importance, que ce soit par une simple conversation ou un éclat de rire partagé autour d’un verre de Slivovica ou de Kruškovac (liqueurs croates). Toujours prêt à tendre la main, raconter une histoire ou offrir un conseil, son humilité et sa gentillesse ont laissé une empreinte indélébile dans le cœur de ceux qui ont eu la chance de le connaître.

En plus de sa famille, Mato entretenait un lien profond avec la communauté croate. Il était respecté et aimé de tous, et ses contributions — grandes ou petites — ont rendu le monde meilleur. Par son travail, ses amitiés ou ses gestes discrets, l’impact de Mato se fera sentir pendant des générations.

Mato a été précédé dans la mort par son père Marko Sonicki, sa mère Eva (Medved) Sonicki, son frère Viktor Sonicki, sa belle-sœur Ruža Sonicki, et sa nièce Jasna Sonicki. Il laisse dans le deuil sa belle-soeur Maria (Lalić) et son beau-frère Alain Rinfret, ainsi que ses deux frères Ivica (Erna) Sonicki et Joza (Anđela) Sonicki, de nombreux neveux, nièces, cousins, cousines, parents et amis qui continueront d’honorer sa mémoire avec amour et gratitude.

La famille recevra les condoléances au salon funéraire le jeudi 8 mai 2025 de 14 h à 17 h et de 19 h à 21 h, suivies d’une cérémonie le vendredi 9 mai 2025 à 10 h en l’église St-Nicolas Tavelic, puis de l’inhumation au cimetière Notre-Dame-des-Neiges à 11 h 15.

En guise de sympathie, la famille demande que des dons soient faits à la paroisse St-Nikola Tavelic de Montréal en mémoire de Mato.

Mato nous manquera profondément, mais son esprit, son amour et sa sagesse resteront à jamais avec nous. Repose en paix, cher tata. Ton voyage terrestre s’achève, mais l’amour que tu as semé continue de briller dans le cœur de tous ceux qui t’ont connu.
