Mei Kuen Li
September 18, 1938 – September 4, 2026
It is with sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved mother and grandmother Mei Kuen Li, age 88 on September 4, 2026.
Mei Kuen was born in Toisan, China on September 18, 1938. As part of the courageous Freedom Swimmers, she bravely faced much danger and hardship while escaping to Hong Kong where she arrived with her husband Wing Yip Ng in 1971 and finally entered Canada in 1974. The difficulties she endured not only toughened her but served to open her heart with generosity towards others.
She will be remembered for her kindness and strong fiery spirit. She valued her family and friendships deeply and in turn was surrounded by many caring friends throughout her life. She was known for her love of gardening, and she generously and freely shared the bounty of her backyard; no one ever left her house empty-handed. Mei Kuen sincerely cared about the well-being of others, and her warmth and thoughtfulness was felt by all that she knew.
She is lovingly cherished by her daughter, Monica Chen, and her two grandsons, Amir and Dara, who brought her much joy and pride.
She leaves behind many dear friends and family members who will miss her greatly and remember her with heartfelt affection.
Her memory will live on and leave a spark in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
