4 weeks now that you passed Miller. Zachary think a lot about you. It’s challenging to deal with his first lost, at 7 years old. He’s watching your « bookmark » beside his bed. Today, he touched his hockey stick with your bookmark. He was ready to make a goal for you. He worked hard, as you were used to do. This goal is the first one in his game, followed by 3 more goals! 
So hat trick for you Miller! A celebration just for you, to the sky!

I had a chance of meeting Miller once, when he visited the Mississauga branch, the old shop on Lenworth Dr.
One encounter and realized he was such a strong personality, calm and determined. He took his time to exchange a few words or conversating with all my peers, with no rush.
I will really miss him.

My name is Ron Ferland  and I work at the Ottawa branch.  About 12 years ago, Miller was visiting the Carmichael office in Ottawa.  We were talking about hockey and how much I would love to see a Montreal Canadiens/Toronto Maple Leafs game.   The very next day, to my surprise, I received two tickets from Miller,  for the Montreal vs Toronto hockey game  in Montreal.  I was so touched.  I took my son, Jesse, with me and we had a wonderful time.  We will never forget that.

Miller loved hearing about our boating trips on the West Coast. We had the pleasure of having Sue and Jesse out on a beautiful summer day while visiting the coast.

I remember Miller for his love of art, and his beautiful paintings.  He had such talent.

I was fortunate enough to meet Miller through my profession and despite his illness already being evident, his strength of character, his resolve and wisdom were always on full display. I only saw him a handful of times, though he still left thank you notes on business cards, that I still have to this day. The work emblem still has a prominent place on my work desk, always reminding me of the tireless leader who knew everyone's name, family, role in the company and their ups and downs. He taught me something in those brief encounters that I still find quite precious: "they're good people Marc". He always valued the soul of the person above all else and it's something that has resonated with me ever since. Well, Miller, you're good people too, one of the best. You can rest now.

What an amazing and unique man you are! Your trace in our life is so important that you will always be with us.

As a wonderful father-in-law for me (how many times I had to explain our connexion!!), you opened your heart, your daily life and your home so generously, you made me feel more than welcomed and loved, even my Sage family and friends!

As a boss for me, being your assistant for one year, you gave me your trust. All these stairs you climb all these years, bravely and strongly! I will remember the time you took to visit all the office in Montreal to present myself to each employee we were able to meet. I had an opportunity to be a witness of the respect that each of them showed. All the messages I read today on this page are just the proof of what I felt. You treated them like family members.
My sympathies to all the employees of Carmichael Engineering over Canada.

As a lovely grand-father for my sons, you always made Jacob and Zachary feel loved and welcomed, even with their high level of energy! Laughing about their jokes, danses or silly words made them so happy! The way you looked warmly at my sons let me believe that family is more than a question of blood. 

Finally, I will probably never meet someone like you Miller! You were brave, strong, perseverant, proud, big worker, generous, smart, visionary, wise, silly and just unique! I will try to transmit some of your beautiful qualities to my sons and be inspired by you as a woman/mother/nurse!
I promise to you Miller, you will never be forgotten by us and always be loved.

Miller, you were larger than life.  A mentor, a leader and a friend all in one.   

Miller joined us on a Weishaupt Burner course once in Fredericton NB back in the 90’s.    The course was great but the dinner, the wine and the great time we all had after was even better.  Mike Cashin, Don Brink and I along with Miller.  Miller being the one who was getting us in trouble and laughing at us all night. Lol.

Thank you so much Miller, you could always make time to listen and give guidance when needed.  It will always be greatly appreciated.

What a profound influence Miller had on my life.

Looking back at over 30 years I am struck by the pivotal role Miller played in shaping the person I have become today. His guidance, wisdom, and unwavering support have been invaluable on my journey. Millers belief in me, was a source of strength and motivation.

His exemplary character and the lessons he imparted have left an indelible mark on my values and principles. Through his actions and words, he was not only a mentor but also a role model, inspiring me to strive for excellence and to approach life with resilience and of course integrity.

As I navigate the challenges of life, I carry with me the lessons he taught me about perseverance and of course work ethic. I have never met anyone that had more than him. Millers influence has shaped my perspectives, and I am so grateful for the incredible impact he had on my life.

Millers encouragement always fueled my ambitions, and I am proud of the person I have become under his guidance. His belief in my potential was always a driving force, propelling me towards personal and professional success. I’m pretty sure it was even him that finally convinced to become a father. 

I will always carry the deepest appreciation for the role that he played in my life's journey. His mentorship has been a gift that will keep giving, and I am forever grateful for the man I have become under his influence.

Thanks for being an instrumental part of my growth and development. Being a friend and being an amazing 2nd grandfather to my boys. 

He will be so sadly missed!!!

My most sincere condolences to the Carmichael family. I am deeply saddened by the news of his passing. 
Even though I was not a long term employee, I came to know Miller perhaps better than some. He was a giant of a man, who had grown a rock solid empire but yet never lost touch of the human aspect of his employees. He cared for the well being of each and everyone who was lucky enough to be employed by him. He never lost sight of his core family values  and treated his employees as assets not liabilities. A recipe for success that most employers forget.

When I started working for Miller at Carmichael in my late teens it was my First Job,  First Boss and First Christmas Party that year,  at a restaurant down the block.  Miller was leaning back on the bar, I went up to him . poked him in the belly and said "Just like the Pillsbury Dough Boy"  The nickname "Pill" lasted for quite a long time over the years.  Miller was a smart, savvy businessman, he was also a very fair, compassionate and considerate man.  His mood could usually be determined by his cigar being straight out or back and forth in his mouth. He took me under his wing and was always very good to me. Miller instilled in me the tools and insights that I have applied in life situations with great success.  I am eternally thankful that Miller was part of my life. as a Boss and a Friend. Over the years I kept in touch and would visit with him when in Montreal.  He would always ask when I was coming back. I will miss him and our conversations.  I know he will be missed by everyone whose life he touched.

His legacy lives on in the exceptional service Carmichael has strived to provide each and every day.

We have remained friends ever since. We met on several times
throughout the years and had many telephone conversations.

Miller, I grew up at Carmichael and you taught me so much that carried me into my consulting and upper management years. You were so much more than a boss or mentor. I still smile at all the inside jokes we had, so many laughs and memories. 
The flowers and thoughtful card you sent to my parents on their 35th Anniversary Party, with such kind words about their son. The wedding gift you sent me that is still part of my everyday life. Opening up your home when my mom was hospitalized in Ormstown, so I could spend more time with her rather than travel four hours each day. Opening up your home and your heart to me twenty years later when I also suffered unthinkable, unfathomable loss.
Sitting with you, with my folder full of mementos I had kept for over thirty years, from all the bonus check stubs where you wrote kind words, the poetry writing book you sent when you knew that was an interest of mine, the seven years of silliness we shared back and forth in our office mailboxes (thanks for that ad for the artificial insemination clinic, by the way), to the Carmichael newsletters, the Montral – Ottawa hockey and softball pics, many Carmichael calendars and cards you sent to me over the years and pics of the going away party you had for me when I moved south of the border. 
Our bond, from that first day in 1986 to the last time we spoke about three years ago, impacted me and stay with me. Consulting for you from 2008 to 2010 allowed us to work together again and our many conversations, during and after hours, personal and professional, are forever treasured by your fellow presbyterian, whether they were about business, sports, family or God. It is commendable to be successful in business, but to also achieve success as a person is truly special. Miller, you were truly special. I am so very thankful for the bond we shared for almost forty years. You will always be a part of me, Miller, and I thank you for making my life better.

Saddened by the news, but smiling at the memories I have of the interactions I had with Miller over the many years as a member the Carmichael team. Years ago I was feeling a little nervous entering his office as a 19 year old apprentice, he immediately made me feel at ease. When we met during his visits to the Ottawa office he’d always chuckle recalling the story where my twin toddlers somehow called 911 and my house was visited by the Ontario Provincial Police. Right through until last summer when we met and was showing him pictures of my family, and my grandchildren, he was smiling, no doubt picturing perhaps another 911 visit! Many of us have been impacted by Miller’s vision and dedication. Not just employees, but our families as well. Heart felt condolences to the Carmichael family.

Miller was definitely one of a kind. I first met him when I started with the company in Mississauga 38 years ago. Ray Sr. had recently passed and I was anxious to meet this man named Miller. He often dropped in for short visits and always had a smile.
I recall many years ago when my beard was completely black. Miller snuck up on me from behind while I was sitting at a desk and gave my whiskers a little tug! He said “ we don’t allow beards in this company! Without a lot of thought, I sprung up and gave his beard ( a mixture of red, brown, and grey whiskers a little tug back and told him “ we do, but they have to be all one colour!” He chuckled out loud and I think from that day on, we had a special relationship!
In the 22 years I was employed by Carmichael, I never missed an hours pay and was always thankful for his employ that allowed me to raise a family and provide for them.
Miller, you will be missed by many and appreciated by all!

A monument has just left us. A man to whom I owe a lot for all that he has given and passed on to me. Miller embodied passion, dedication and ambition for his work. He has been a role model for all of us because of his managerial qualities. He was much more than a boss in this company, he was like a father to all of us, always there to listen, support and guide us. He was always there watching over us to make sure everything went well. How many times have I been able to talk to him about anything and everything, because he always made us feel important to him. Miller's overarching value was always to make sure we were a family, to always feel good every day we spent in the office.
 
Miller, it is with great sadness that I learned of your departure. I have had the honor of working with you, exchanging and learning a great deal from you. I have had and will always have immense respect for the man you were. I can't thank you enough for everything you've brought to my life. You have always listened to my needs and taken the time to meet them.
 
Ray and Maddie, you are a reflection of this great man. You are following in the footsteps of this man who instilled very good values in you. I am not at all worried about the future of this great company.
