I am so sorry about the loss of your father. This is always going to be a tough thing to cope with, but I expect even more so after all the current problems that have been weighing us down. 

I was not attached to my genetically-related father (a long story), who I didn’t like anyway, and felt I had lost completely when I was about 17 when he became a very different person, and his passing had little effect on me. But I was devastated when my step-father died, much earlier than he should have. He was very generous and supportive towards my mother, my sister and me, and this left a huge hole. When this happened, a friend gave me advice that was comforting, which was that you will always think about him, that this will be a lot at the beginning, and then less frequently and often at unexpected moments. But these thoughts will turn from sadness to good memories, and that it is these, which can be very uplifting, that you will learn to treasure. This is what still happens to me some 21 years later.

I just learned from Jocelyn that your dad died despite initial promise after the surgery. I am so very sorry. You were very blessed in your parents. Both were such fine people. You will always miss them. 

I’m glad I got to meet each of them a few times so I have a bit of a first hand sense of what they were like.  Please send me your dad’s obituary when it is published. 

I am very happy to hear that you were able to be there with him through the end. I imagine it was difficult but being apart would have been much worse. 

I know it will be several weeks at least before I can see you in person and many months till I can hug you, but I’m happy to talk anytime you might feel like it.

I read the beautiful tribute about your Dad this morning in the G&M. It was touching, funny and moving - I just loved it. Your Dad sounds like somebody I would have really liked. I loved the line that he didn’t think he was old until he had reached 90 - and of course the precision dishwasher loading is classic. What an amazing legacy he left behind with his incredibly successful children.

Hi Francoise,

It was a beautiful sunny day here - the warmest so far this year - and I actually enjoyed being out on the road. During one stop, there was laughter coming from a restaurant patio, where several 'distanced' patrons were enjoying their lunch with a cold beer in their hand.

I thought of your dad, and the pleasure David and I had sharing stories with your sweet father, while enjoying a cold beer and some fish and chips at one of his favourite pubs. Today would have been his 94th birthday, and when I arrived home, I poured myself a cold beer, and had a gentle stroll down memory lane.

My thoughts are also with you, as you navigate this new normal, and deal with the emotional roller coaster of daily life, along with any possible surges of sadness or sprinkles of joy and warm memories  of your father.

We saw each other about a year ago and I remember talking about your upcoming trip to the U.K.  You were going with your dad!  I found it remarkable that a senior gentleman (!) could travel overseas!  How wonderful to have spent such quality time with an elderly parent in his living years!

According to your description your father knew exactly what the odds were when he underwent surgery   It certainly was a gamble; you had him home for only a short time and then he was gone. I’m glad his pain was not prolonged; he has earned his rest.

We spoke after his surgery and he was doing so well. We talked together of him living to 100 and then we’d renegotiate.

Richard Headley Baylis, aged 93, of Westmount QC, passed away November 18, 2020  at the Montréal Heart Institute.

He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother, and friend.

He was dearly loved by his children Françoise Elvina Baylis, CM, ONS, PhD (Michael) of Halifax, NS; Frank Headley Baylis (Valerie) of Beaconsfield QC, Peter John Baylis, PhD (Adrienne) of Canmore, AB; and Penny Jane Baylis, MD of N.D.G., QC; sisters Elvina Patricia Goss and Barbara Mary Stallworthy; and seven grandchildren: Kaila Alexandra, Jacob Alexander, Peter Edward, Victoria Grace, Julia Marie, Maya Gabrielle, and Liam Richard.

He was predeceased by his daughter Pia Maria and his beloved wife Gloria Leon Baylis (née Clarke).

A webcast ceremony was held November 23, 2020. The funeral service was held at Ascension of our Lord Parish November 24, 2020. Father Lawrence MacEachen officiating.

A funeral reading: Paul was born in Yorkshire and went into the RAF at the age of 18 where he travelled to Rhodesia by ship which took 3 weeks to get there.  He met Dick (Richard) Baylis his life-long friend there who was later to be Paul’s Best Man when he married the love of his life Beryl Ackril.  Dick later moved to Canada but they always stayed in touch, Dick visiting Paul in the UK many times when visiting his family.

Whilst in Rhodesia Paul and Dick built a ¼ full size Piper Cub model aeroplane around 1948/1949.  Dick later had this crated and shipped back to the UK.  They both flew this initially free flight and then in the very early days of single channel home built valve radio.  On an occasion it crashed in to the control tower at South Cerney airfield (near Swindon) breaking the nose of the aeroplane and as Paul said many times, left a yellow mark on the wall of the Control Tower!  It then resided in Paul’s loft for many years when John, his son was growing up.  Then one day down it came and he rebuilt it with modern radio gear to fly once again.  John is proud to say that he flew this on a couple of occasions, more importantly Paul and Dick both flew it together on its 70th Anniversary during his visit to the UK and Paul had it ready to fly again on Dicks last visit early last year but unfortunately weather conditions stopped this.  Paul was very upset to hear that his life-long friend had passed away on 18th November 2020 at the age of 93.

Uncle Richard always had a special place in our hearts.  I always enjoyed his visits back to the UK and my one stay in Montreal back in 1993.  
He had quite an amazing life from rural Gloucestershire to cosmopolitan Canada and must have been very proud of your mother's and his children's varied outstanding achievements. Rip.

Growing up so close to my grandparents, I was very fortunate to have my grandpa in attendance for my major life milestones. I knew that I could always count on him being there. 
I recently graduated from engineering, and he was there to share that most recent achievement, one that we have in common. Although I wish that he could have been here for the milestones yet to come, I am so grateful for all that we were able to share.

My Dad, Richard Headley Baylis, was my North Star.

When I was unsure of what would be proper conduct, when it came to matters of integrity, when I did not know how to act or react to some situation, in all of those moments of indecision, those times of darkness, I could always look up to my Dad for guidance. 

His answers were simple, direct and clear. He innately knew what was right and what was wrong. 

Strong, kind, giving, caring, tough, willing to sacrifice for the betterment of others, he was a better man than I am. His legacy continues to guide me as I aspire to become more like him.  I hope to give as much to others as he has given to me.

Season's Greetings to you and family after a most challenging and indelible year!

Your Dad was always consistent, in sending Christmas greetings to my parents, and then my mother when my father died. My mom spent her last years in LTC with Alzheimer's. Each year, I wrote back to your Dad with a high-level synopsis of the happenings that year and an update on my mother Jean. For close to 5 years, your Dad and I lived "parallel" lives as primary caregivers for "Old time West Indian women" in congregate care. 

I admired your father for his devotion; truly, he was a gentle man.  In our written communications, Richard would mention you and how supportive you were of him and your mother. Your being proximate to both, was indeed a great comfort.

Many of you may not know that my middle name is Richard. I am named after my Grandfather. I am proud to share this name and hope to carry all that it means to me. To me, Grandpa was determined, precise, devoted and put family first. I am honoured to carry this name with me. 

Grandpa, I will make you proud. 

To all of Richard's children,

I was able to be with you all as I went to Martin and Mandi's to see the funeral on TV.  Sorry we were not able to be there.

We were so fortunate to see Richard last year for Vina's 90th Birthday. Looking so fit; he always sounded good when I rang him. 

Richard had a good life, wife and wonderful family and did so well with all your care.

Richard Baylis was really like my second father and I was fortunate to have known him for over 30 years. I am very sad that he has gone. Many people have described him as a gentleman and this is a good description—he was a true British “gentle” “man” in all the best senses of these words. To me, he was a man of character, kind, unfailingly polite, engaged—someone who knew his place in the world but was never afraid of change.

He could be charmingly eccentric, wearing his sport jacket to chop wood or his flamboyant red velvet bow tie that he reserved for special occasions, and which he always wore with a twinkle in his eye. In fact, this is how I like to think of him now—attired in his best sport coat, with the suave moustache and red bow tie and a glass of champagne in his hand. He always loved a good party and a good time.

Richard was also a man of strong opinions and personal moral convictions who was not afraid to speak his mind. We had many conversations upon topics that we did not agree, but these were always respectful and showed his willingness to listen to both sides of an argument. He was also a particular man who liked things just so, from the large to the small: whether packing the recycling, parking his van in a particular spot in the garage, or applying just the right paint colour to the fuselage of a beloved scale model plane. He was always a man of structure and integrity and he applied these principles to much of his life.

But I also like to think of Richard as a man with great good humour, who loved an adventure and a bit of speed. I will never forget sitting in the passenger side of a little car, driving through the narrow back roads in the lovely English countryside with the hedgerows whipping past us at breakneck speed. I clutched the door handle with a tight, white grip and imagined him in his youth with the top down, jaunty racing scarf around his neck and with that twinkle in his eye again. Richard, you will be missed by many.

So sad to hear about the passing of your father, he was such a sweet and kind soul, and I will forever cherish the memories we had together. I will really miss cooking dinner and enjoying it with your dad, he would always tell me the most interesting stories and new updates on his model plane hobbies. He was a remarkable man who taught me so much in such little time.

I know that recent days must have been especially difficult as you struggle with a very personal loss. I lost both my parents in the last two years, so I know the sense of sadness and finality that eats at your heart. However, I am grateful for all the wonderful memories of earlier times and find that more and more, those moments overshadow the terrible images of my parents struggling with disease and disability as they reached the end. 

I imagine that the holidays will feel bittersweet under the circumstance, but my heart and warmest wishes are with you and your family.


As I reflect on my journey with my father, two themes come to mind; "keep calm and carry on" and my father was a good man. 

I would not describe the early years with my father as calm. With four children and corresponding strains, this was understandable. "Keep calm" grew in my father over the years. I distinctly remember a conversation we had following his second heart attack in 1989. He conveyed a sense of acceptance and stillness with his circumstances and a strong expression of care, love and concern for his wife, my mother. In the moment when he believed he was going to die, he was sorry to let me know that he first thought of his wife, my mother, and expressed concern about the pain it would cause her.  Even then, over 30 years ago, he felt he had lived a good life and felt himself to be a lucky man. He was calm. 

Needless to explain, "carry on" he did! From WW2 to our current pandemic, my father got the job done. From annually staking a Christmas tree in our Toronto yard which could withstand a tropical storm, to his professional contributions with aviation landing systems, and quality control with Spar aerospace satellites, doing the job right the first time was not an expression but an expectation. 

Perhaps more than anything else, my father was a good man. A gentleman. A man with a suit for every occasion: gardening, painting, flying his planes, with a hat usually to match.

My father was also a great support to me during my years playing hockey. Even in such environments, he was a gentleman in his taunts and heckling of the referee. With time, he became increasingly vocal, reaching for his eyeglasses;"Hey referee, you may need these more than I do".  

Most recently, I witnessed my father care for my mother during her most challenging times. I cannot imagine a more diligent, loving and present caregiver. He "carried on".  As will be the case for many of us, my father's unspoken lessons live on in us all as we say goodbye. 

Goodbye, Dad. I love you. Thank you. 

Honoured to call Richard my father-in-law since Peter and I married in 1994, Richard has been a consistent and devoted presence in my life and the lives of my family, including Maya and Liam, two of seven grandchildren, of which Richard and Gloria  were incredibly proud. Consistency in word and in action can be rare, yet were pillars upon which  Richard’ built his accomplished life.. From sending hundreds of handwritten Christmas cards each year, to remaining at Gloria’s side, in sickness and in health,  Richard truly lived his values and was a man of his word. I am forever grateful to have known Richard, as the father of my soulmate, and the grandfather of my children. I see Richard’s best qualities in Peter and my children. These will live on, along with a love of big band jazz music and, of course, the importance of dessert, reflecting an appreciation of the simple and sweet parts of life. May you Rest In Peace, Richard. You are dearly loved and will be remembered, as we carry you in our hearts  forever.

I just came to hear your father passed away and want to extend my warmest sympathies to you and your entire family as  I listened of their sharing of a warm, loving, simple yet abundant father who gave so much to his family and everyone he met.

The feelings of courage, strength and peace came over me for your father  to consciously make a decision that was to save or be the last hours of his life;  truly a remarkable human being who was peaceful, present and grateful with and for his life; a wonderful teaching of how to always trust oneself.  

As children, we are an extension of our parents and gifted the opportunity to continue the legacy of greatness they shared with us.  As a  leader with so many people in your life everyday,  may you continue the legacy of Integrity,  Respect and Generosity in honour of your Father and Compassion, Kindness and Love in honour of your Mother.

I never met Mr. Baylis but I met & I know his son Frank, & from my experience I am sure he is a great man. In order to raise such family, with great values where justice & humanity play a great role in their life, he must be an exceptional person.

I believe when we die only the body leave this earth. As long we keep them in our heart & thoughts they will never die.

The thoughts that come to mind while thinking of my grandfather are the years that we spent living together in the home just the two of us. 

He  introduced me to the world of big band music. A world of music that I had never known about until then, a world music that I now love. 

I think about how he never showed his age. He'd be up till 2am, staying up later than me to work on his planes or some other project. He was an inspiration to me in electronics. 

I also think about how he always seemed so laid back, allowing a bunch of musicians, mostly strangers, to film a music video in his house. How he was keen and willing to be a part of the fun, even scoring an acting role in the video, which he pulled off amazingly! 

These are the thoughts that stick with me when I think about my grandfather. I'll miss him.

I have so many memories of my grandfather. Second breakfasts and waffles. My madame rouge photoshoot and endless scurrying downstairs to disturb him in his workshop to showcase the styles we’d pulled together from grandma’s closet, him never growing tired of the endless interruptions. The many, many Jordy Theatre plays we saw together, after which we were always promised our choice of donut from the neighbouring Tim Hortons. Now Sunday dinners and his ever tempered words of wisdom at our family dinner table when the discussions grew heated, as was often the case in our household.

I cherish all of these, but what I cherish most is what he taught me as a husband to our wonderful grandmother. He loved her with a gentle fury. He was caring, present, and selfless. I am forever grateful for the love that we got to witness, and the love that he let us share in. He gave us a real life, epic love story. His was a love and a life well lived.


My most sincere condolences to you and your family for the passing of your father. 

While I didn’t know Mr. Baylis personally, I had the opportunity to cross path a few times with him. From what I am hearing, he was the definition of a gentleman and he truly embodied ‘la bonté de coeur’. 

I am sure he will be missed a lot. No matter what age we are, we will always need our parents. 

I first met Dick in 1964 at a flying club, where he was secretary.

With time, my English being very poor, we managed to develop a friendship in spite of communication problems. Over the years we grew closer and seldom did we fly alone.

Our partnership at the field grew into a daily phone call of communication whereby we solved world problems.

His expertise as an engineer held us in good stead, when we encountered rebuilding our crashed aircraft.

I'm sure Dick was welcomed in heaven by the other pilots waiting to enjoy his building skills.

I will miss our beer together at the end of a flying day, and will continue to cherish the memories of our times together, daily.

As your neighbour Penny, I did not see your dad very often. But when I did, I was struck by his erect stature and his smile. He was very pleasant to spend time with and I know his loss will leave a hole in your heart that only the fond memories you have of him can heal.  I know for certain that your faithful 4 footed companion Gabby, certainly knew she was in for a treat seeing your dad who doted on her.  Please know that John and I join the many other people who offer their sincere condolences to you and your family on the loss of your dear father.

My deepest condolences as your loss is deeply troubling as you have lost more than a father.  You have lost a father, a brother, a friend. Make sure to give my regards to your brother and sisters. I hope to see you sometime soon.

Frank I think you owe it to yourself to move away from the pain you are in now. As you know, my home is always open (if you  feel like getting away for  while) although I cannot feel the pain you are feeling at this time. Hopefully we will spend some time together in the future.

Try to imagine this.

You're a new pilot having just entered the hobby and you're out at a flying field, that you just joined, with your foam plane designed for beginners.

An S.U. V. pulls up into the parking area and two guys start unloading what seems to be a monster of a plane.They both carry out the fuselage (main body) to a spot near the runway, followed by the wings, which appear to be covered with a silk fabric. Over the next 30 minutes they start assembling this magnificent yellow bi-plane which I can't take my eyes from.

I stay a respectful distance away because I'm not sure of the protocol and don't want to get in the way of assembly. Then it's finally ready. Both gentlemen line up the plane at the beginning of the runway and before you know it, it's airborne.

I can't tell who's flying. Both pilots have their backs to me. In the air the plane looks real, not a model but an actual bi-plane that I'm visually experiencing for the first time.

After a few minutes the plane comes in for a perfect landing and I can tell both pilots are very excited with the performance.It was the planes first flight.

I want so much to walk over to them but I'm still very hesitant. Taking a leap of faith, I saunter over and say "hello". I then get the shock of my life. These two seniors turn around to see who's there. Seniors, my God.

They looked like they were in their forties, how they carried that plane out of the S.U.V. and then were down on their hands and knees installing the wings etc. That was how I first met Dick the creator of that monster plane, and his friend George. 

Dick in fact was doing the flying. At that time Dick was 88 years old and George 82. We became good friends which was a life enhancing experience for myself. In their company I always felt young, I was 70 at the time, and they paved the way for how one can live young, even as the years tick by.

What a tragic turn of events, my condolences. I hope, with time, your presence helps ease your grief a little. My grandmother, whom I lived with for many years, died in early May and not being able to there, to have to say goodbye over the phone as she was unable to speak on her own, was very hard.

Some early memories include watching him build his model planes piece by piece and explaining the entire process. It was incredibly mesmerizing. Feeding his pet turtle, his faith in my ability to renovate the hose when I wasn't even sure myself. 

Mr. B along with Mrs. B, were and will always be such a huge part of our lives.  They helped us through some challenging times and were always there to lend a hand and guide us.
 
We hold so may fond memories that will last us a lifetime. We are forever grateful to have ad the change to be included in  such a loving family. 

The spirit of Mr. B will long live in out hearts. May he be at peace and find eternal resting place with the love of his life.

MY DAD
93 years old.
He lived his life on his terms.
He lived his best life right until his passing.

At 93 he was:
- Driving
- Building a new radio controlled model airplane yearly
- Flying his model airplanes and socializing within his club
- Reading his newspapers, reading the Economist cover to cover, and completing crosswords daily
- Chatting with his good friends Georges and Jack
- Enjoying the best of  Barbados:  enjoying his house, the beach, the Surfside’s fish cakes, banks beer and sunsets. He was content there
- Volunteering to teach English and volunteering to deliver meals to those in need
- Enjoyed socializing, gin and tonics, rum and ginger, rum toddy’s, rum butter. ( I think you get the picture) 

He was generous in all ways. He was an epic example of Keep Calm and Carry On. He only recently said to me” you know I think I’m getting old.”

He was a man of faith. His religion and his parish Ascension of Our Lord meant so much to him.

He was a devoted husband. When he started to suffer from heart issues in his fifties and when he was told at around the age of 60 he would only have 10 years to live, two things kept him going; his faith and his wife.

He went about his life with a quiet strength, with humility, gratitude, dignity, and integrity.

He (as well as my Mom. I have to mention her because they were truly a great team) taught me how to be. Not just through words but by example. By how they chose to live their lives.

In this way my father taught me so much. He truly supported me, without judgement, in all my endeavours. And I observed him so the same for all his children.

I rejoice that my Dad now joins his wife and his parents.

Richard Headley Baylis (and Gloria Leon Baylis): They are and will continue to be my role models, my heroes.

I was a young boy in 1957 when my parents became the best of friends with Dick and Gloria and remained so until my parents passing  many decades later. During this time, Dick was always someone special in our  lives.

Amongst the countless, favorable memories were Christmas day visits from Dick and Gloria. With the presents unwrapped, Dick would pounce on the games that I received, playing with me and my dad for hours to the dismay of the womenfolk, with a very youthful spirit of energy and curiosity.
  
My very heartfelt condolences to all the Baylis family.

There are so many little things I’ll remember about my grandfather. 

The way his massive sneezes would reverberate through the house, making the walls feel like they were shaking; or the way he would try to explain to me how to load the dishwasher properly to avoid “clankers”, only for us to silently come to a mutual understanding that I would never be able to load it properly and that he would always have to reorganize it just right. 

But what I’ll remember most of all are some of the things I learned from him: to be true to yourself, to be grateful for all that you are blessed with, to love your family unconditionally, and to pursue your interests with passion and commitment (and yes I’m talking about his love for model airplanes).
 
His love story with granny and the way he cared so deeply for others around him will continue to inspire me for the rest of my life. In his physical body, grandpa’s heart might have grown old and decided to rest, but his spirit was always young at heart and it will live on in us and the lessons we’ve learned from him forever. 

C’est avec une très grande tristesse que nous avons appris le décès de M. Baylis. Au nom du club Amidair de Mirabel et de ses membres, nous souhaitons vous faire l’expression de nos sympathies et de nos plus sincères condoléances.

M. Baylis adorait venir faire voler ses avions à notre club, il avait du plaisir à discuter de sujets variés avec ses amis qui étaient nombreux parmi nos membres.  Il était apprécié de tous par sa bonne humeur, il était une force de la nature. Il conduisait de Montréal à Mirabel, à son âge avancé c’était vraiment hors du commun, il avait plus d’énergie que plusieurs d’entre nous pour pratiquer son hobby préféré.

En reconnaissance de son âge avancé nous lui avions décerné il y a deux ans, le titre de membre honoraire, je crois qu’il en était fier, il était bien humble mais je crois qu’il avait apprécié ce geste du club. 
Que son âme repose en paix, il nous manquera.

It’s terrible to hear about the passing of your dear father and I would like to express my sincere sympathy to you and your family. Words, however kind, can’t mend your heartache, but those who care for you share your grief and wish you comfort and peace  to bring comfort, courage to face the days ahead and loving memories to forever hold in your heart.

Your dad was quite important to me on several aspect of my life and I'm glad that I was able to tell him in person last Christmas that I've used him as a model in my engineering profession. 

He was technically very sharp and influenced me to set the bar higher than I would have. Being so technical, believe it or not I can still see you in Toronto holding steady that drape pole and your dad trying to say keep it steady, simply said ...quit oscillating!!

You know of course he started with an edge as my idol for model making. I can still remember going into his small shop building our submarine or going to the park in front of your house flying our line control and  throwing apples at them !

Recently I exchanged with him about a long time question I always had about his contribution to the Arrow and because you recognized the moment, you said why don't you ask him yourself and forwarded me his Email. I'm so grateful you did. I still felt the same pleasure in those last exchanges as I did way back when in Toronto when I would ask questions about his plane.

What can I say Frank... I've been blessed to have a friend like you. We have had some real good times together and I've learned so much from your mom and dad.
