Sylvia Cotran Melka

With deep sadness, we announce the passing of Sylvia Cotran Melka, a beloved mother,grandmother, great-grandmother, friend, and confidante whose warmth and resilience left an indelible mark on all who knew her.

Born in Haifa in 1936, Sylvia embraced a life of adventure and courage when she fell in love with Roger. The two shared a love so deep that she defied her father and convention and followed him across the world, eloping to an icy new country to be with him.

In their new home of Montreal, Sylvia faced every challenge with grace. She learned a new language to integrate and thrive, becoming not only a devoted mother to her three adoring children but also one of the first women to earn the distinguished title of “Évaluateur Agréé”. Her dedication to her work led her to serve with pride at the federal government, where she made a lasting impact.

Beyond her immediate family, Sylvia’s heart extended widely, cherishing her large, close-knit family across three oceans and six continents. She dedicated herself to bringing everyone together, nurturing a shared bond and fostering strong values that continue to influence each new generation. Her family gatherings, filled with laughter and love, are cherished memories that reflect her belief in the importance of unity and connection.

Known for her adventurous spirit and love of fun, Sylvia brought fun and energy wherever she went. She was afraid of nothing – well except the water – but even that she overcame and became an avid boater! She learned to ski when she was almost 30 and pregnant with her third child …taking her two eldest along with her! She loved playing bridge, dancing, exploring the outdoors, and riding ATVs with her grandkids, but truly was happiest watching hockey and cheering on her beloved Habs – always especially happy when they beat the Bruins! Her zest for life was contagious, inspiring those around her to embrace every moment with the same enthusiasm.

Her adventurous spirit permeated to her work life as well where she re-invented herself time and time again with no fear and an uncanny ability to succeed and excel at pretty much anything she put her mind to. From appraiser to business manager and marketing exec, through travel agent, and finally to real estate broker, she never shied away from a challenge.

Sylvia was also blessed with countless friendships that she treasured throughout her life. Known for her forthrightness with advice, listening ear, and generous spirit, she became a trusted source of guidance for many. Her friends knew her as a source of warmth and comfort, someone who gave freely of her time and insight. Her advice and laughter brightened the lives of all who crossed her path, creating bonds that will live on as part of her legacy.

Beloved mother, preceded in death by her devoted husband, Roger Melka, she leaves behind her three children, Nadine, Eric and Corinne. Her later years were filled with the joy of family. She was blessed with nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, each of whom brought her boundless happiness.

Her legacy is one of love, strength, unity, adventure, and fun—a testament to a life fully lived and a spirit that continues to inspire. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

There will be a visitation on Sunday November 17th from 10am to 12pm followed by a memorial service at 12pm at Collins Clarke MacGillivray White Funeral Home at 5610 Rue Sherbrooke Ouest, Montreal QC H4A 1W5 (514.483.1870).

Avec une profonde tristesse, nous annonçons le décès de Sylvia Cotran Melka, une mère, grand-mère, arrière-grand-mère, amie et confidente bien-aimée dont la chaleur et la résilience ont laissé une empreinte indélébile sur tous ceux qui l’ont connue.

Née à Haïfa en 1936, Sylvia a embrassé une vie d’aventures et de courage lorsqu’elle est tombée amoureuse de Roger. Les deux ont partagé un amour si profond qu'elle a défié son père et les conventions pour le suivre à travers le monde, s’enfuyant vers un nouveau pays glacé pour être avec lui.

Dans leur nouveau foyer à Montréal, Sylvia a affronté chaque défi avec grâce. Elle a appris une nouvelle langue pour s’intégrer et prospérer, devenant non seulement une mère dévouée à ses trois enfants adorés, mais aussi l'une des premières femmes à obtenir le titre prestigieux d'« Évaluateur Agréé ». Son dévouement à son travail l'a conduite à servir avec fierté au gouvernement fédéral, où elle a laissé un impact durable.

Au-delà de sa famille immédiate, le cœur de Sylvia s'étendait largement, chérissant sa grande famille soudée à travers trois océans et six continents. Elle s'est consacrée à rassembler tout le monde, cultivant des liens partagés et des valeurs fortes qui continuent d'influencer chaque nouvelle génération. Ses réunions familiales, remplies de rires et d’amour, sont des souvenirs précieux qui reflètent sa conviction en l'importance de l'unité et de la connexion.

Connue pour son esprit aventureux et son goût pour le fun, Sylvia apportait joie et énergie partout où elle allait. Elle n'avait peur de rien – enfin, sauf de l'eau – mais même cela, elle l'a surmonté et est devenue une passionnée de navigation ! Elle a appris à skier à presque 30 ans alors qu’elle était enceinte de son troisième enfant, emmenant ses deux aînés avec elle ! Elle aimait jouer au bridge, danser, explorer la nature et faire du VTT avec ses petits enfants, mais elle était vraiment la plus heureuse en regardant le hockey et en encourageant ses chers Habs, surtout lorsqu'ils battaient les Bruins! Son enthousiasme pour la vie était contagieux, inspirant ceux qui l’entouraient à embrasser chaque moment avec la même ferveur.

Son esprit aventureux se manifestait également dans sa vie professionnelle, où elle se réinventait sans cesse avec audace et une capacité incroyable à réussir et exceller dans tout ce qu’elle entreprenait. D’évaluatrice à gestionnaire d’entreprise, en passant par responsable marketing, agent de voyages, et enfin courtier immobilier, elle ne recula jamais devant un défi.

Sylvia a également été bénie par d'innombrables amitiés qu'elle a chéries tout au long de sa vie. Connue pour sa franchise, son écoute attentive et son esprit généreux, elle est devenue une source de conseils de confiance pour beaucoup. Ses amis la connaissaient comme une source de chaleur et de réconfort, quelqu’un qui donnait librement de son temps et de son expérience. Ses conseils et son rire illuminaient la vie de tous ceux qui croisaient son chemin, créant des liens qui vivront comme une partie de son héritage.

Mère bien-aimée, précédée dans la mort par son mari dévoué, Roger Melka, elle laisse derrière elle ses trois enfants, Nadine, Eric et Corinne. Ses dernières années étaient remplies de la joie de la famille. Elle a été bénie avec neuf petits-enfants et deux arrière petits-enfants, chacun lui apportant un bonheur sans limites.

Son héritage est celui de l'amour, de la force, de l'unité, de l'aventure et du plaisir – un témoignage d'une vie pleinement vécue et d'un esprit qui continue d'inspirer. Elle sera

profondément manquée et toujours mémorisée.

Une visitation aura lieu le dimanche 17 novembre de 10h à 12h, suivie d'un service commémoratif à 12h au salon funéraire Collins Clarke MacGillivray White, au 5610 Rue Sherbrooke Ouest, Montréal QC H4A 1W5 (514.483.1870).
