George was born on May 4, 1928, in Peekskill, New York, to the late Lawrence J. Keefe, Sr. and Marilla (McCoy) Keefe. He was raised by his loving stepmother, Irene (McCoy) Keefe. A proud member of a well-known Verplanck family, George was the son of Lawrence “Punchy” Keefe, the last “Lord Mayor” of Verplanck.
He graduated from Hendrick Hudson High School in 1945 and went on to serve in the United States Navy during World War II. Following his military service, George began a long and distinguished career with IBM, where he worked for 38 years as a research staff member. During his tenure, he contributed to early computing systems development and is credited with more than 12 patents in his name.
On April 11, 1959, George married his beloved wife, Dorothy (Druschen) Keefe, who predeceased him. Together they built a life centered on family, community, and enduring love. George is survived by his children, Carolyn Castellani, Alison Keefe, and George “Andy” and Andrea (Wyskida) Keefe; his grandchildren Paige and Nick Gallant, Jeremy Keefe, Melissa Keefe, Hope Castellani, Jason Keefe, and Andrew Keefe; his great-grandchild, Kellen Gallant and many loving nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his son-in-law Dana Castellani, and his brothers Larry, Pete, Jack and Rich.
George was known throughout his life as a lifelong “Pointer”, an engineer at heart, and a natural tinkerer and fixer of anything and everything. He was deeply proud of his Verplanck roots and was often found sharing stories of his childhood and the rich history of the river town he called home. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, and a friend to all. He was especially active in the lives of his grandchildren—rarely missing any event, whether sports, dance, school milestones, or graduations.
An avid animal lover, George also found joy in the companionship of animals throughout his life. He was a lifelong Catholic and attended Trinity-Boscobel United Methodist Church, where he remained active in his faith and community.
Pop will be remembered for his sharp mind, generous heart, storytelling spirit, and unwavering devotion to his family.
