

Eric Jerome Etherly, affectionately known as “Topper,” passed away on August 30, 2024, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was born on June 30, 1961, in Flint, Michigan, to the late Franklin Thomas Etherly and Thressa (Henderson) Norman. He was the sixth of eight siblings.
Eric attended Flint Southwestern High School, graduating in 1979. He soon began a career in the retail home furnishing industry, which he continued after relocating to California in December 1981. Over his 44-year career, he held regional management positions at Levitz, Jeromes, and Macy’s Inc., where he concluded his professional journey as a regional director of operations.
On February 14, 1987, Eric married Laurie Jean (Boyd) Etherly, and together they raised two sons, Eric Jerome Etherly II (E.J.) and Darnell Jerome Etherly (D.J.). Eric was a man of great positivity and believed in uplifting those around him. Eric accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Vernon Chapel A.M.E. Church in Flint, MI. He later joined Harris Temple COGIC in Flint, where he was a member of the Fraternity Order of Holy Brothers.
Eric enjoyed life to the fullest. He loved golfing, photography, and trips to the casino. He also cherished vacations, especially in Mexico. Known for his infectious laughter and warm personality, Eric brought joy to everyone who knew him.
Eric is survived by his beloved sons, Eric Jerome Etherly II and Darnell (Destiny) Etherly; grandchildren, Mia and Malachi Etherly; siblings, Joyce Ann Starnes of Manhattan, Kansas; Franklin (Gale) Etherly of Inglewood, CA; Graylin (Angela) Etherly of Dallas, TX; Deborah Etherly-Whitehead of Flushing,MI; Rhonda (John) Butler of Flint,MI; Roderick Etherly of Flint,MI and Kesha Norman of Flint, MI. He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will forever hold his memory dear.
