

Born on February 12,1936 in Estill South Carolina to Walter Brown Sr. and Louise Brown. James was raised in Savannah, Georgia, where the values of hard work, integrity, and family were instilled in him early in life. He was the eldest of three sons, followed by Walter Brown Jr. and Jesse Brown Sr. a role that shaped his lifelong sense of responsibility and leadership.
James entered the United States Navy on April 5, 1954 enlisting through Charleston, South Carolina. He served honorable aboard the USS Castor ( AKS-1) and was honorably discharged on July 18,1958, as the U.S. Naval Station in San Diego, California. During his four years of service, he formed a lifelong friendship with his best friend, Mac. Following his separation from the Navy, james resided in Los Angeles, California.
After departing the Navy, James pursued a career with the United States Postal Service (USPS), dedicating 39 years of federal service before retiring. Alongside his career; he continued his education at the Junior College of Business, where he met the love of his life, Gertrude Brown. The two were married on August 22,1959, beginning a union that would span 66 years, rooted in love, perseverance, and unwavering commitment.
Committed to growth and skilled work, James later transferred to Trade Tech College, where he studied to become an electrician, further reflecting his strong work ethic and dedication to providing for his family.
James was a hard-working, devoted family man who believed in providing for, protecting, and standing strong for those he loved. In his free time, he enjoyed golfing and had a deep love for music, finding joy, peace, and relaxation in both. He built a legacy grounded in family unity, discipline, and strength.
He leaves behind his loving wife, Gertrude Brown; his children, Kenneth E. Brown, James E. Brown Jr., and Kenneisha E. Brown; and extended children Troy Woodman and Joseph Serena.
He also leaves to cherish his memory his grandchildren: Micheal Brown, Kenja Brown, Aniya Willis Brown, Javionne C. Brown, Ta'riyah Willis, JI ani Wells, Jauqez Ligon, Jaision Ligon, and Ja Kai James Ligon.
James Edward Brown Sr. will be remembered for his honorable military service, dedication to education and work, lifelong friendships, leadership as the eldest son, and deep devotion to his family. His legacy lives on through the generations he helped guide, protect, and love.
