Juan Ramón Mérida cubrió al mundo con expresiones de amor en inglés y en español. En el verano de 2019, fue pionero con una veintena de universitarios estadounidenses de origen mexicano en el Programa de Inmersión Cultural y Voluntariado PICV. Las jóvenes y los jóvenes estuvieron en tres comunidades de población maya: Peto, Muna y Oxkutzkab. Visitaron los cenotes, convivieron con la cultura maya y aportaron mucho a la comunidad. Juan Ramón daba clases de inglés a niños mayas y lo enaltece el gesto de que se desplazó a una población vecina la última semana para cubrir a una compañera que debía retornar a Bakersfield. En la plaza hay una placa conmemorando a esos maestros y Juan Ramón no será olvidado. Descase en paz.

Dear Merida Family,

My deepest and most sincere condolences on your loss. Unfortunately, I too know the devastation of losing a loved one so unexpectedly. It changes your life and leaves an leaves a void that at times feels like it will never be filled. I am sending you positive light and energy to help you through your grieving process.  I did not know Juan but please know that in his last minutes of life, he was not alone. I work at the University of Washington and was one of the first few people that responded to his medical emergency. Myself and two other staff members tried to help him after he collapse and stayed with him until the fire department and paramedics arrived. I wish that we could have done more and I am truly saddened by the outcome. I wanted to reach out because I felt compelled to let you know that he was cared for in his last moments of life.

This is a photo from a trip to NYC visiting a company we worked for. I’ll never forget Juan’s face lighting up during this trip at all of the lights and sites in the city. Juan was always kind, gentle, smart, hardworking, and really easy to talk to. I send my deepest condolences to his family and loved ones, and prayers for peace and comfort during this very difficult time; Juan will be greatly missed.

I have this fond memory of Juan when he was an RA at Marshall College, UC San Diego. Juan had so much fun that day sporting his fave Pokemon shirt for his staff photo!  I had the pleasure of working with Juan later after he graduated, in HR at UC San Diego. He was a kind, thoughtful soul and will be missed dearly....

I met Juan when he started as a new employee at UW and was brand new to Seattle. Juan and I bonded over both being from California and attending UC’s as undergrads. I was so happy to have another person on our team close to my age. We spent many hours chatting at my desk: talking about our families, ranting about life, our hobbies and things we cared about. We shared so many laughs together. Juan ended up being one of my work besties. We ate lunch together frequently and worked closely together as colleagues. Juan was such an amazing spirit. As a new Seattleite and new employee, he was so outgoing and full of adventure. He inspired me to put myself out there, not care about what others thought of me, and to put myself first. He was one of the reasons I loved coming to work everyday. Thank you for being a part of my life. Thank you for the laughs, for being there for me, for being my friend.

I met Junior when he and Melly came up to the PNW to explore a few summers ago! He was so kind, had the best smile and watching him and Melly engage with each other was the sweetest thing. 

My heartfelt condolences to Melly & her family. I can see how much light Junior brought to all he touched. May he rest easy and may you all take solace in the fact that he was so very loved and cherished by so many people in this life.

when I dislocated my knee in the middle of the night, I called juan at 4 in the morning, waking him up, asking if he could pick me up from the hospital.  He did without a single hesitation.  I knew he would, and that's why I called him.  He's a brother who always had my back.
