Sterling Lee Nixon, born August 5, 1949, and called home on December 23, 2025, lived a life defined by quiet strength, generosity, and unwavering devotion to the people he loved.
A proud son of Houma, Louisiana, Sterling began his education at St. Lucy Catholic School before graduating with the Vandebilt Catholic High School Class of 1967. He went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from Nicholls State University, a foundation that launched a distinguished 33-year career with Shell Oil and later as a respected consultant for Chevron. Sterling approached his work with the same precision, humility, and dedication that shaped every part of his life. A gifted mechanic and natural problem-solver, he could fix anything placed in his hands, and he found joy in the roar of race cars and the thrill of NASCAR.
Sterling’s life was a testament to service—service to his family, his community, his faith, and anyone who needed a helping hand. He leaves behind a legacy of integrity, generosity, and love that will continue to guide those who were blessed to know him.
A man of deep faith, Sterling was a devoted member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Morgan City. His greatest pride, however, was his family. He shared 27 years of love and partnership with his wife, Gay Mitchell Nixon, and was a steadfast, loving presence in the life of his daughter, Chasity Nicole Mitchell. He is also survived by his brothers, Ambrose "June" Nixon, Jr. and Edward Charles Nixon; his brother-in-law, Marvin Joseph Lewis; his sisters-in-law, Barbara G. Lewis, Lorraine Carter, and Greta L. Lewis; his godchildren, Sidney Angelle Hebert and Onya Bierria; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends whose lives were brightened by his kindness and steady spirit.
Sterling was preceded in death by his parents, Ambrose Nixon, Sr. and Rose Navarre Nixon; his brother, Mckinley Grant, Sr.; his sisters, Augustine Grant and Daisy Grant Jackson; and his brother-in-law, Leroy "Boo" Lewis,
Sterling’s family extends heartfelt gratitude to the remarkable caregivers who supported him with compassion and dignity: Chasity Mitchell, Carletta Singleton, Judy Delco, Mary Bergeron, Bobby Jones, Odessa Frank and Chris Phillips. Deep appreciation is also offered to Dr. Metz, the staff of Ochsner St. Mary’s 6th floor, and the team at Thibodaux Rehab and Wellness Center for their attentive care.
