

Marion Catherine Czachor (née Melsheimer), 102, a resident of the Grace Ridge Retirement Community, passed away on January 25, 2021. Marion, fondly referred to as “Mimi” by family and friends, was born in Chicago on July 19, 1918.
After high school, Mimi moved in with her Aunt Margie in Muskegon, Michigan to attend
Muskegon Junior College, where she studied business. After college, Mimi worked at Fletcher’s
Company, then General Dye Company, a German-based company.
Mimi met her first husband, James Bombenger, at a party for the pastor of St. Martin’s Church,
located at 59 th and Princeton, in Chicago. It was at that party where Mimi met up with a friend
from high school and her husband, Richard Bombenger, Mimi’s future brother-in-law. Mimi
married James Bombenger in 1944, at age 26, at St. Margaret’s Church. During World War II,
Mimi served as a volunteer Air Raid Warden in the Brainard Community.
Mimi had three children with her first husband: Susan Mary, James John and Jayne Marie. The
family moved from Chicago to Villa Park in 1953. Mimi served as the President of the
Community Women’s Club of Villa Park. The Club raised money to give scholarships to college
students. Mimi worked at Ovaltine Factory with her daughter, Sue, and future son-in-law,
Michael Eagan, as Executive Secretary to the CEO.
Mimi’s first husband passed away in 1969. A few years later, Mimi married Edward Czachor. Ed
and Mimi remained married for close to 30 years. Together, they traveled both domestically
and internationally. In 1983, they moved to Hendersonville, North Carolina, where they enjoyed
the mountains and local attractions . In 2003, Mimi moved back to Chicago to be close to Sue
and her family before returning to Morganton, NC in 2016 to be near son Jim. Upon Mimi’s
return to North Carolina, she met her dear friend Marcy Brown and the two hit it off almost
instantly. Marcy and Mimi saw each other every day and became the best of friends.
Mimi was preceded in death by both of her husbands and her oldest daughter, Sue Eagan. Mimi
is survived by her two children James ‘Jim’ Bombenger (Tracy) and Jayne Wolff, her son-in-law,
Michael Eagan, granddaughters, Meghan Eagan (Ryan Schlifka), Heather Watters, Jennifer
Wolff, and Sydney Hancock, two great-granddaughters, Áine Watters and Vivienne Eagan
Schlifka, as well as Ed’s children Ellen Czachor (John Furby) and Robert Czachor (Jane Czachor),
and two grandchildren Kathryn Furby and John Furby.
