Ruth Carothers age 96 passed peacefully 2/2/2021 at home in the presence of her family. Ruth was born on May 11, 1924 in Belleview, New Jersey to parents Sherman Haggerty and Mildred LaMond Haggerty.
She is survived by her son Richard “Ted” Philip Carothers Jr. (Vivian) and daughter Mary Susan Clemons (Mike). She has 7 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Richard Philip Carothers and her 3 brothers Sherman, Edgar, and Robert (Bob) Haggerty.
Ruth married Richard Philip Carothers in 1942. The couple had 3 children together, including 1, who died in infancy. Richard and Ruth were a military family and lived in Texas, Arizona, and Georgia. Ruth was a very devoted mother and wife. She was always actively volunteering in the community in which she lived. After her husband’s death Ruth moved to Florida and then to NC.
Ruth worked as an accountant for the IRS. After retirement she was deeply involved in the Order of the Eastern Star and served as the Grand Worthy Matron of Amaranth for the state of Florida. Ruth enjoyed a variety of hobbies. She enjoyed woodworking, crocheting, playing cards, traveling, oil painting and reading. After moving to NC she enjoyed volunteering in the arts and crafts program at Autumn Care of Drexel and going to the Senior Center in Hildebran.
At Ruth’s request she will be buried next to “the love of my life” in Atlanta Georgia. In lieu of flowers she requested donations be made to your favorite charity.
The family gives special thanks to Caregivers by Design, Hospice of Burke Co. and Dr. William Johanson for their compassionate care.
