She was born on August 12, 1943, in McDowell County, NC, to the late Lester and Atlas McKinney.
Wanda devoted her life to caring for others. In earlier years, she worked in pediatrics and in the operating room at a local hospital. Alongside her husband, she later operated a rest home and family care home in the community, where she dedicated herself to serving and caring for others. During those years, she also opened her home and heart to foster children in need. Caring for people was not just her profession, it was her calling.
She was a faithful member of Missionary Ridge Baptist Church and loved attending church services. She openly shared her love for the Lord throughout her life. Wanda truly loved people and was known for her kindness and willingness to help anyone in need. She was also a wonderful cook who lovingly prepared meals that brought family and friends together around her table. Her family was the joy of her life, and her warmth and steady presence left a lasting impression on everyone who knew her.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ernest Robert Cable; and her brothers, Dean McKinney, Rev. Bob McKinney, and Eugene McKinney.
Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Linda Lowdermilk and husband, Doug; her grandchildren, Cole; Brandy and her husband, Alex; her great-grandson, Oakley; along with extended family and friends.
A graveside service will be held at Sugar Hill Baptist Church Cemetery in Marion, NC, at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 7, 2026.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff of Grace Heights and Amorem Hospice for the compassionate care, kindness, and dignity shown to Wanda during her final days.
