

Mr. Hilman was a native of Plaucheville and resided in Lake Charles for 25 years, then Moss Bluff for over 30 years. He was a graduate of St. Joseph Catholic School in Plaucheville, and graduated from Sowela Tech as a machinist. He began his career as a machinist in Gulf Machine Shop in Lake Charles, and then retired as a machinist from PPG in 1993. He was an U.S. Air Force Veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was very involved in the Catholic Church, serving as an Acolyte, CCD Teacher and Lay Minister with St. Margaret and St. Theodore Catholic Church. He loved gardening, was an avid outdoorsman, and loved playing with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary Gail Whitfield of Moss Bluff; children, Karen Crochet and husband Larry of Moss Bluff, Phillip Whitfield and wife Loran of Moss Bluff, and Scott Whitfield and wife Tricia of Moss Bluff; brothers, Elward Whitfield and wife Beryl of Metairie, and Burton Whitfield of Houma; grandchildren, Heather Boudreaux of Moss Bluff, Phillip Whitfield and wife Sarah of Moss Bluff, Aaron Whitfield and wife Lauren of Lake Charles, Ellaina Whitfield of Lake Charles, Coby Whitfield of Moss Bluff, Joseph Whitfield and wife Sarah of Lake Charles, and Rebecca Whitfield of Lake Charles; great grandchildren, Lilith Boudreaux, Ruthie Whitfield, Aubrey Whitfield, Everly Whitfield – born on September 25, and another great grandchild due in March. He is preceded in death by his parents, Cullen and Marie Whitfield; brothers, Richard Whitfield and Herbert Whitfield; and sister, Rita Firman.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. on September 28, 2012 at St. Theodore Catholic Church. Rev. Msgr. Charles Dubois will officiate. His grandchildren will serve as his pallbearers. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on September 27, 2012 at Hixson Funeral Home of Moss Bluff and will continue at 8:00 a.m. Friday until the time of service at the funeral home.
