Jimmie was born on December 10, 1947 to Andrus and Jeanne Abshire in Sulphur, LA, the third of nine children. He was a lifelong resident of Louisiana. In 1966 on a blind date, he met his friends date, who later would become his wife. They resided in Moss Bluff for 43 years before the roads were paved and hunting from your front door was allowed, welcoming six children.
He was a proud father who found much joy in spending time with his family, showing them to live life with a humble, selfless heart, and remaining kind no matter what life may have brought about.He demonstrated his character to them by volunteering as a First Responder and Fire Fighter for Ward 1 Fire Department often answering to "HIS" favorite dispatcher, Ruth. Before retiring from the department in 1998, earning the title of Captain. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, a good BBQ, gardening and cooking the best gumbo. Competitive sports; boxing, football, auto racing really got his heart pumping, especially with his children. He also enjoyed dabbling in light livestock. When he graduated to "Pop" he enjoyed taking the grandchildren for rides on the tractor.
He was welcomed into heaven by his parents; a son; Jimmie Wayne Abshire Jr., two brothers; Allen and Ned Abshire, one sister; Brenda Schultz.
Those left to exemplify on his character are his wife of 50 years; Ruth, his children; Jesse Abshire, Scott "the favorite" (Ashley) Abshire, Chuck (Shay Trout), Christina Summerlin "The true favorite", and Andy "the other favorite" (Kacy) Abshire, his grandchildren; Damian Shotwell, Hali Abshire, Wyatt and Addyson Abshire, Tylor and Gauge Abshire, Alexander (Sydney) Summerlin and Johnathan Summerlin, Aidan and Baylor Abshire, eight great grandchildren, along with numerous nieces and nephews, a brother; Michael Abshire, his sisters; Ruby O'Neal, Diana Smith, Roberta Ledoux, and Marilyn George along with numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will welcome friends at Hixson Funeral Home of Moss Bluff on Friday, February 28, 2020 beginning at 1pm until time of service. His Celebration of Life will begin at 6pm, led by Father Guilbeau followed by a Cursillo Rosary.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the family for funeral expenses.
