Betty Lou (Cates) Donahoe

Betty grew up in Mt. Enterprise alongside her older brother, Austin and younger sister, Jeannie. Upon graduation from Mt. Enterprise High School, she moved to Nacogdoches where she met Wallace Reed Donahoe in 1956. After a short courtship, she and Wallace were married on June 21, 1957.

Betty and Wallace called both Shreveport and Houston home throughout their 65 years of marriage. Together they had four children — Stan, Pattie, Kathy and Shanon. Wherever she found herself, Betty was driven to help those around her. In addition to her beloved role as mom, Betty was an administrative assistant at Tenneco for many years before retiring from her job in 1997. She was a devoted member of Spring Baptist Church, participating in the senior choir. At home, she was a gifted seamstress and chef in the kitchen, with a significant talent for baking as well as gardening. Her family was her greatest joy and loved spending time with her children, ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings and loving husband. She is survived by her children Stan (Cathy) Donahoe, Pattie (Joe) Stephens, Kathy (Mike) Cantley and Shanon (Tommy) Shumpert; her grandchildren Jessica (Bart) Dobson, Clint (Melinda) Cantley, John Bird, Candace Counts, Caitlin (James) Rollins, Lisa Speights, Curtis (Andy) Donahoe, Tyler Shumpert, Hayden Speights and Layne Shumpert; her great-grandchildren Peyton Cantley, Braxton Cantley, Macie Dobson, Jewel Bird, Jaden Bird, Jesse Bird and Everett Counts; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will be accepting visitors on Tuesday, October 17 at 1:00 p.m. at Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Home (5400 North Street Nacogdoches, Texas 75965) with funeral services to follow at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow the service at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery.

Gifts in memory of Betty can be made to the Spring Baptist Church or the Alzheimer’s Association.
