Cleon Scarborough served his Country in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. Upon returning home to Nacogdoches, Texas, he became a teacher, principal, and superintendent at Martinsville ISD from 1957 to May 1990.
Cleon was a preacher at the Swift Church of Christ at the time of his death. Cleon studied and taught the Word of God from 1957 until his death in 2021.
Even though Cleon did not like to be the center of attention, he had an undeniable impact on the community. If he were here with us today, he would not want us to share grief and sorrow. Instead, his desire would be to focus on the happy memories and joyful experiences shared over the years.
Papa was a man of few words but when you heard that monotone voice carry out across a room, you could not help but stop and listen. Papa’s words always had purpose and although the meaning was not always immediately known, the metaphorical “bomb” had been set. Sometime later, maybe a few hours or even the following day, BOOM, it hit you like a ton of bricks and suddenly those “meaningless” words made so much sense. Papa never raised his voice or showed any kind of anger toward his family, even though Jason, Hunter, and I definitely tested the limits. Instead, he had this way in which he would express a few words of disappointment then casually walk away leaving us with a sense of profound sadness. It did not take long after that before we were telling him how sorry we were begging him not to be disappointed in us anymore. Papa was a very unique man who set a lasting impression on everyone he met.
He was a great teacher and a dependable friend. His advice and guidance will continue to carry me and so many others through the joys and challenges that life has to offer.
