

A graveside service will be held for Eunice M. Layton, 88, at Sunset Memorial Park in Nacogdoches, Texas, at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 29, 2017. Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Layton passed away peacefully at home in Lufkin surrounded by family Sunday night, March 26th, after a lengthy illness.
Eunice Murray Layton was born near Etoile, Texas, February 17, 1929 to Floyd Emmet and Inez Powers Murray. She was the oldest of three children. She graduated from Chireno High School in 1947. She worked at McCrory’s in Nacogdoches and Woolworth’s in Houston before her marriage to Elvin Lamar Layton, April 30, 1950, in Nacogdoches. They were married over 67 years.
Mrs. Layton, a life-long Texan, resided most of her life in Angelina and Nacogdoches counties, but also lived in Houston and briefly in Bay City. She worked on the family broiler farm near Chireno for 30 years. She was a member of the Chireno Baptist Church. She liked to travel, was an avid reader, quilter, crafter, and “42” player, but what really gave her joy in her life was spending time with her family and playing with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and her brother Homer Eugene Murray. She is survived by her husband, Elvin Lamar Layton, 92, of Lufkin (son of Guy Vernon and Alma Layton); 4 children: Clifton Roy Layton and wife Lynda Jo Murray Layton, of Lufkin; Laura Sue Layton Earls and husband Leonard Monroe Earls of Summerfield, Oklahoma; Betty Elaine Layton Gipson of Lufkin; and Shirley Ann Layton of Lufkin; one brother, Robert Earl Murray and wife Willie Atkinson Murray of Chireno; 7 grandchildren: Meredith Lynn Layton Cizlak and husband Mehdi Cizlak , of Lufkin; Forrest Alan Layton and wife Emily Toopes Layton of Franklin, TN; Ashley Layton Freeman and husband Eric Freeman of Lufkin; Alicia Jean Earls of Austin; Melissa Ann Gipson Matney and husband Corey Matney of Bay City; Stephen Neal Gipson and wife Sheena Marie LeGault Gipson of Shiner; and Jennifer Rae Gipson of Houston: 10 great grandchildren; Joseph Kendal Cizlak, Joshua Keyya Cizlak, Jackson Lamar Layton, Charlotte Mae Layton, Rivers Layton Freeman, Grace Noelle Freeman, Gavyn Neal Gipson, Lilyana Grace Gipson, Tobias Wayne Gipson, and Carter Jerry Gipson.
Pallbearers will be Stephen Gipson, Forrest Layton, Leonard Earls, Corey Matney, Eric Freeman and Mehdi Cizlak.
