Henry Merle Shepherd was born August 5, 1948, in Newton, Texas, the son of Albert and Opal Irene (Cooper) Shepherd. He passed from this life on October 21, 2025, in Nacogdoches, Texas, having attained the age of 77 years.
Henry grew up in Newton and graduated from Newton High School. He went on to attend Stephen F. Austin University and it was here that he met his wife, Sheila Teresa Cornett. He served his country in the United States Navy.
Mr. Shepherd was the Parts Manager for Mike Perry Motor Company for over 35 years. But we would be a miss if we did not include his long devotion to the Nacogdoches Parks and Recreation Department as a Softball Umpire and Scorekeeper for over 30 years. In the day, he went from one job to the next and it extended well into the night.
His hobbies and interests included hunting, fishing, sports-- especially baseball (the St. Louis Cardinals and the Houston Astros) and football (the Dallas Cowboys and the Texas Longhorns), and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Sheila Teresa Cornett Shepherd of Nacogdoches; children, Richard Brian Shepherd (Tiffany) of Texarkana, Jennifer Diane Sherer (Robert) of Houston, Paula Amanda Shepherd (Torey Bledsoe) and Alecia Christine Shepherd (Jacob Griffin), all of Nacogdoches; grandchildren, T.J. Shepherd of Cushing, Tara Hadnot (Andy Webster) of West Linn, OR, and Max Sherer of Houston; siblings, Alfred “Cotton” Shepherd of Splendora and Mary Ray (Bobby) of Beaumont.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Albert & Opal Irene Shepherd; siblings, Melda Joy Lindquist, Della Mae Johnson, Maggie Brewster, Alberta Shepherd, Dora Shepherd, Baby Boy Shepherd, Edmond Sheppard, Ivey Shepherd and twin brother, Jesse Shepherd.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, November 1, 2025, in the Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Home with Bo Norris officiating. Visitation will be on Friday, October 31st, from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. Interment will be in the Alazan Cemetery where military final honors will be rendered by the U.S. Navy.
Memorial Contributions may be given to the National Kidney Foundation in Henry’s name.
Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements.
