September 17, 1930-October 5, 2025
The beloved grandparents, parents, husband, brother and granddaughter of Janet Davison Miller Fry rejoiced October 5, 2025 when Janet joined them in their Heavenly home. Janet died peacefully in Dallas with family members in constant attendance during her last days.
Born September 17, 1930 in Nacogdoches, Texas to William Wallace Davison and Irma Greve Davison, Janet enjoyed a joyful childhood in Nacogdoches with her cherished grandparents James Joseph Greve and May Cauwenberg Greve. She graduated from Nacogdoches High School in 1947 and attended the University of Texas at Austin where she was a member of Chi Omega sorority and obtained a BS degree in Psychology. In 1950, she married Tom Edwin Miller. Once her four children were older, she earned two masters degrees – one in Education from Stephen F. Austin State University and one in Social Work from the University of Texas at Arlington
As a young wife and mother, she worked as an elementary teacher in Galveston. She later transitioned to a career in social work with Angelina County and Memorial Hospital in Lufkin and returned to teaching. Janet taught 6th grade at St. Cyprian’s Episcopal School in Lufkin for many years ultimately becoming its principal. She also served St. Cyprian’s Episcopal Church as a lay reader and member of the Altar Guild.
Fiercely proud of her Texas and American colonial ancestry, Janet was a member of The Daughters of the Republic of Texas and The National Society of Washington Family Descendants, serving as the society’s President General 1998-2002. She enjoyed extensively researching her family genealogy and left her family scores of records of the results of her hard work.
Janet was lovingly devoted to her children and provided them with her unwavering love, attention, guidance and support throughout her life as they navigated the challenges of school, marriage, parenthood and career. She always put her family first and she will be dearly missed by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In her 70s, she married Max Fry and embarked on 12 wonderful years of travel all over the United States in their RV and accompanied Max as he played bass guitar in his son’s band and with other talented musicians. These years with Max, who was a kind man with a warm sense of humor, were some of the best of her life. Janet dutifully cared for Max until his death in 2015.
Janet was predeceased by her parents, husband Max, brother James Wallace Davison, and granddaughter Megan Elizabeth Keith. She is survived by her four children:
Laura Miller Keith and her husband, Kevin; Linda Miller Averyt and her husband, Robert; James Wesley Miller and his wife, Carole; and Elizabeth Miller Saxton and her husband, Jamie; nine grandchildren, Laura Averyt Picha and her husband, George; Sarah Averyt Woods and her husband, Wes; Katherine Keith Mamola and her husband, Gabe; Lucy Keith; Whitney Keith Paulus and her husband, Mitch; John Saxton; Sam Saxton; Jack Miller and Sal Miller; and ten great-grandchildren, George and Sarah Picha; Hannah and Abby Woods; Luke, Roger, Michael and Joseph Mamola; and Declan and Megan Paulus.
We mourn Janet’s loss, but we know that she is now free of pain and is celebrating with her beloved relatives in Heaven.
Graveside services will be held October 11, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at Oak Grove Cemetery, 200 N. Lanana St., Nacogdoches, Texas.
