She was born July 23, 1934 in Rusk, Texas to Alton and Arcenoe Henderson and graduated from Rusk High School. She moved to Nacogdoches to attend Stephen F. Austin under the guidance of her aunt and uncle, Jessie and John S. Wyatt.

Steve and Lue Gene graduated from SFA and moved to San Diego, California where Steve proudly served in the United States Navy. They returned to Nacogdoches and built a business, home, and family. Lue Gene worked for McKinney Oil before working with Steve for John S. Wyatt Office Supply and Story Wright Office Supply. Lue Gene and Steve worked together, relaxed together, traveled together, and worshipped together. He was her best friend for 62 years. They were proud SFA alumni, involved in the community, and active members of First Baptist Church Nacogdoches.
