

Nelda Jean Hammett of Nacogdoches passed away Wednesday, August 12, 2020, at her home at the age of 80. She was born October 14, 1939, in Looneyville, Texas to parents Doctor Reeves Messec and Effie (Rogers) Messec.
Mrs. Hammett earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from Stephen F. Austin State University, where she met her husband Jack. She was an English teacher at Hudson I.S.D., Nacogdoches I.S.D., Katy I.S.D., and Houston Community College. She was a member of First Baptist Church Nacogdoches. Nelda also was a member of U.S. Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of American Colonies, Daughters of 1812, Daughters of the Republic of Texas, Colonial Dames of XVII Century, and United Daughters of the Confederacy.
Mrs. Hammett was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, James Arnold Messec and Bill Messec.
She is survived by her sisters, Dorothy Fay Cale of Terra Alta, West Virginia and Joann Whitaker of Longview, Texas; husband, Jack Hammett of Nacogdoches; daughter, Heidi Lynn Miller and husband Phil of Layton, Utah; grandson, Travis Alan Waggoner of Layton, Utah; granddaughter, Jaclyn Elizabeth Gentry and husband Josh of Richland, Washington; and 8 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, August 16, 2020, at Cason Monk-Metcalf Sunset Chapel officiated by Pastor Mark McLendon. The service will be livestreamed on Cason Monk-Metcalf’s Facebook page for those who are unable to attend. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park.
