Mrs. Netha Myrle Burnaman O’Meara, born in Nacogdoches County, Texas, passed away on Easter Sunday, April 5th, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. She lived a long, full life marked by dedication to her family, her faith, and her profession.
Netha was born to Daisy and R.M. Burnaman. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Wadus, Vernon, and Buel; her beloved husband, John Patrick (Pat) O’Meara; and her daughter, Rose Kathleen (Kathy) O’Meara Eddington.
She is survived by her loving children, Sharon O’Meara, John O’Meara and his wife Alice; her beloved grandchildren, Joshua and Julia; and her loving nephew Duane Burnaman and his wife Galyn, along with many extended family members and dear friends who will miss her deeply.
Netha spent most of her life in Houston where she met and married her husband, the love of her life. Together they built a life centered on family, faith, and service to their community.
She loved to help others and found her true calling in nursing. She was honored to shape the future of nursing through educating the next generations of nurses. She was also very proud that she was allowed to maintain her registered nursing license for over 55 years, well beyond retirement age.
Netha served as a nursing professor for many years at various higher level institutions, including Stephen F. Austin University. She also contributed to several publications and served as textbook reviewer, including after retiring from teaching. She touched the countless lives of patients with her compassion and dedication. Nursing was not just her profession, but her passion. Many times while visiting relatives or friends at various hospitals, her former students would surprise her “Do you remember me? I loved your class so much!”. She loved nursing and teaching others, and was grateful that she got to do both.
Her faith was an important part of her life, and she joyfully served her church community by teaching Second Grade Sunday School for many years. She also found great joy in simple pleasures and lifelong interests, including gardening, reading, cooking, traveling, and studying genealogy, research, and history. Above all, she treasured time spent with her family and the many friendships she cultivated throughout her life.
Netha will be remembered for her warm heart, her unwavering faith, her strong work ethic, and her deep love for her family. Her legacy lives on in the lives she touched and the love she gave so freely.
